2001 Buick Park Avenue Overcooling Code
On my dad'* 2001 Park Avenue. The service engine soon light will come on when the Heater is turned on. When you look at the temperature gauge the temp will drop about 10-15 degrees to 160F. At that time the service engine soon light will come on. When you turn off the heater the temperature will go back up. Our mechanic checked the code and he said it had to do with overcooling. He said maybe the thermostat. But wouldn't that cause overcooling all the time?

That depends... The thermostat may be stuck open to a certain degree... If it is it will be hard to keep the car warm... The Heat in these cars comes from the hot coolant passing throught the heater core... This will cool the engine a bit... But my first check would be that Thermostat... Factory should be a 195 F ...

I had my car in its third winter not keep the water as hot. Instead of 194 and up like other winters on digital readout, it was starting at 185 and then only crept up with more driving time.
I replaced with a new Stant and it'* at 196 again.
