Default 96 Buick Regal 3.1 with no reverse.

My buick started clicking while in reverse about one year ago. I could adjust the shift lever a little and it would smooth out. It'* always been sticky going in to park but a month ago it started getting worse. A week later it was tough coming out of park and finding reverse. I could usually go through the gears and eventually find reverse but today that ended.
If I shift down all the way and back to reverse it feels like it'* found the spot but just wont engage.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Johhny

You can check the shift linkage to make sure its moving properly, but it sounds like it might be your park neutral position switch

Sounds like you MAYhave a broken Park rod.
Do this, with the engine off, put the selector in Reverse and see if the car will roll. If it doesn't roll, the Park rod is broken.

I did what you suggested and it doesn't roll.
You seem pretty confident that is the problem which makes me think you've dealt with these before. How big of a job is that to replace. I'm having trouble finding any info.

Thanks,
Johnny

You will need to lower the subframe and remove the transmission side cover. Once you are there, you will need to unbolt the detent from the linkage shaft and remove the rod. You will need a new shaft but you should be able to reuse the side cover gasket and O ring.

I can't really comment on how long it will take as I do not know what you have for a facility and equipment.

I believe that this has been discussed here before.

Does anyone know where I can buy this part?
I ordered one a couple weeks ago from Transmission Center Super Store but it has yet to arrive and they can't (or won't) give me a tracking # for some reason.

My car is stuck in park in all gears now and I want to fix it tomorrow. Hopefully I can find one and have it shipped overnight.

Thanks

I would try a GM Dealer. Here is the part # according to Alldata: 24213560.

Thank you. I ordered a backup just in case the first order doesn't show up. The dealer will have it Thursday morning and I'm hoping to be back to work on Friday.

You have been a big help.
