If the blocks are different, do you think a 3.8L could've been swapped in? Out of all of the 2.8L parts I've bought, are there any that would not fit a 3.8L?
The casting #'* I got off of the LIM are:

CMI-PMB 44 & 10070150 & 14091889

I highly doubt anything from a 2.8 would fit a 3.8. That'* a serious size difference in blocks. Heck, a lot of things won't even swap from 3.4 to a 3.8.

Thanks for the replies Mike & JW. This is a stumper. The plug wiring worked out to be as it should for this car, but when I had #1 cylinder on the front
bank Pass. side according to the LIM casting (Cyl. #'*), it was absolutely wrong. When I used #1 cylinder on the rear bank - Pass. side (marked as #2); it was right. When I am stuck inside with the snow flying, I'll see if I can track down the #'* on this LIM.

Now I'm left guessing (for now), if any of the new parts I bought are defective. Mainly curious about the Echlin EGR from NAPA and the Cardone Reman. ECM. The new EGR valve tested borderline good/bad on the vacuum test. Some times the car will start without depressing the throttle, then surge as it comes to a steady idle and other times (mostly) with a warm engine I have to hold the pedal down a little, then work the throttle to keep it running, until it idles on it'* own. The only relearning the ECM has done is setting while idling. I might need to run it down the road. The IAC seems to be the problem here - I did reset it. All new injectors and plug wires yet I still see a rich condition on the scanner. Today the injector pulse width was 2 to 2.3 ms. Seems a little too much in my mind.

anytime you replace components or unhook the battery you got to give it a while to relearn values

That'* what I'll do then. Before fretting about any single component, I'll drive it around Monday to let it relearn, then see what'* going on.

Well, I finally got to do a test/relearn run this evening. I was pretty sure it would
start without throttling while cold. It did. I drove about 3 or 4 miles at different
rates of speed, came to a quick stop to make sure it wouldn't die. I didn't. Pulled
up to the drive way and shut it off. It started back easy. Shut it off and tried it
again. I had to work the throttle to get it running and work it some more to get it
to idle. The CEL kept going on & off during the test run. The engine was a little
sluggish on the restart. I sprayed carb cleaner under and around the plenum and over
all vacuum lines back to where they go under the floor board before I test drove it.
No signs of vacuum leaks. Now I'm thinking the Coolant level sensor is one problem.
It shares an ECM ground with the CTS, MAP, & EGR - The Coolant Level light stays on a
lot; before and after the latest repairs this summer. I haven't checked for codes yet,
but I imagine there is a low voltage signal for the MAP and TPS. I'm going to get it
inspected tomorrow and consider a bit more about the CLS. Maybe unhooking it will help.

if you have a scanner that reads live data, did you see what the tps input looks like on the pcm? you clean the ecm and sensor grounds?

Yes, I cleaned all grounds. I've adjusted the TPS twice. I set it at .55v and it now reads .69v - .73v variation on the scanner. The ECM sees anything .70v and lower as idle. The TPS voltage smoothly rises with acceleration.

On the IAC, the FSM says if idle is too high, it will display "0" counts. If it'* too low it will read 80 or more. I'm getting "0", yet the idle seems too low. Then on the Code 35 page, which I don't get Code 35, it says if the system is too rich - IAC will read scan counts usually above 80. I have a rich condition but the scan counts are always on "0".

I'm wondering if the P,N,L,D encoder being erratic and the CLS sensor being defective will cause problematic readings.

I meant to say: "cause problematic readings on other sensors".

normally the level sensors just go to the dash or alarms, not the pcm
