Leaking engine oil from the trans?
Okay so first off, Hello GMFORUM! I just mossied my way over here from JF and I have a very very strange problem (or maybe not)
So, my girlfriends has the;
1999 Buick Regal GS VIN;1 (supercharged)
It'* a super nice car, w/ leather, power, great handling and fast as ....
The complaint; GF says low oil light is on. Check the oil it'* a qt. low. Top of oil, reset light. Good to go? Next day the light comes back on while I'm at school. She calls me and tells me it'* ticking real lightly (yes, it'* a lifter tick) Tell her to park it and I'll be home after work. Get home late (to late to check it) Glance under it the next morning at 7am and there is at LEAST a qt. on the ground. Text her and tell her not to drive it. I get home from school today and this is where things get weird.
No oil in the engine at all. I get under there with the thought that its the front main crank seal, clean up everything with some degreaser, put 3 qts in and a small bottle of dye. 10 minutes pass, no leak. Start it up and confirm lifter tick, I look under the car and see a STEADY stream pouring out. So I get under there and realize that it'* not the front main, put the trans. output shaft?
WAAA?
Listen guys, I know this is where it'* coming from, the shaft coming from the final drive, to the wheel assembly. It is not diluted with ATF or heavy gear oil. I only put the dye in the engine and it'* pouring out of there.
So my question is for you GM fanatics here, what transaxle am I working with here? Why is engine oil coming out of the trans output shaft? I understand that not all final drive units take gear oil, some do take ATF or a different oil, but oil directly from the engine??? Something isn't right here... (or maybe it is) If that'* the case and this in normal, then I'll just figure out what seal it is (scarf, lip, what have you), pull the wheel assembly and shaft and replace it.

Posts like a Turbo
I believe the oil pressure switch is right above there, I'd be thinking it'* that, no possible way for engine oil to go into the transmission.

Your gonna laugh at this, but... engine oil is not coming from the transmission. It'* coming from the oil pressure sensor that sits directly above the output shaft. Your like the 3rd one in 2 months that has experinced this. It'* happened to me twice before.
Easy fix. Based on your vehicle, the part you need costs about $14. Its a Oil Pressure Switch.

You guys are awesome! Can you believe I'm a tech student to? I feel like an idiot! Oil pressure switch is a common one and dumps that much oil that quickly too? Damn...

Only thing that keeps the oil from coming out of the sensor is just a thin little plastic diaphram that pushes against the sensor itself. Once a hole opens up, that oil will seep right out of the electrical connector.

Lucky you, you have the short sensor, but still not small enough for a socket. Your gonna have to go wrench. 7/8 I believe.
