Default GXP Problems

I have a 05 Black GXP that I totally loved when I bought it brand new. I have always been a fan of the Bonneville and I have owned several. I really like the styling and power of the GXP but I am majorly dissappointed in the quality of this car. I have experienced problems since day one after purchasing this vehicle new. Now that it has 44,000 miles on it, the problems only get worse. The front end has been repaired by the dealer 7 times and it still makes clunking and grinding noises. The front brakes and rotors have been replaced twice. The moon roof has been repaired 5 times and continues to be a problem mostly by sticking open and raining on me, it'* happened twice. The motor mounts and transmission mounts have broken and have been replaced. The oil cooler lines and valve cover gaskets have been replaced after leaking oil. The fog light wire harnesses have been replaced twice. The plastic body panels are loose and some parts have even fallen off of the car! Please be warned that if you purchase a used Bonneville GXP, you might be getting this one! It'* too bad because I grew up in Detroit and try to support American made. I have had several GM products and not one of them has been reliable. I will probably go back to Ford. My 03 Navigator is two years older and has only had a couple of minor repairs. My 98 Taurus is still going strong with only regular oil changes and a tune-up at 100,000 miles.

It is very disheartening to hear of all your problems. This is obviously a big disappointment for you. While every car has its problems, you seem to have had them all in a single purchase.

There are certainly a few "chronic" issues with the GXP, but by far yours seems to be the worst. I'm not really sure what to suggest. Have you been to the same dealer for all the service? I found for example, that a Cadillac dealer had far more experience with engine related problems. There are now more Pontiacs with the Northstar engine, but for a while the Bonneville was the only car in this line. Any of the other body type issues should be fixable by any dealership.

I've had my oil cooler lines replaced twice and my transmission lines once. A compass module, water pump and intermediate steering shaft. Brakes have been done, but only due to normal wear. The front main seal on the engine has also been replaced.

These cars are also known for some water leaks. These are often solvable with a trip through our techinfo section and searches within the forum. Several people have great write-ups here to help with this.

The fog light harness is a problem (although mine has been fine). I generally don't drive with my fog lights on unless there is fog, so my lights see very limited use. There have been a couple of reports with sunroof problems, although not extremely frequent. Some of the other issues you speak of (valve cover seals for example) don't seem to be common issues.

Again, very sorry to hear of all your problems. These are otherwise very nice cars to drive. I find mine extremely comfortable on the highway. Even with the problems I've seen, I wouldn't get rid of mine (although I've had significantly fewer issues).

ddalder, thanks for the pointers. I will indeed take it to the Caddy dealer now that it'* out of warranty. I am going to switch to ceramic pads and I will post the results. There has also been an issue repairing the loose body panels, the can't locate the correct replacement parts. I will post the proper part numbers, when they figure this out, in-case anybody else needs the info. I have the feeling that the oil cooler lines might have been stressed due to the broken engine and transmission mounts. I Guess I did not save anything by not getting the extended warranty, oh well! ! I grew up in Detroit and as a matter of pride I would like to think that it'* just a case of bad luck. I really appreciate all the great information on this site and I thank you again for replying.
