Help! Grease or replace Intemediate Steering Shaft
I had a klunk you could feel in the steering wheel and the dealer replaced the intrmediate steering shaft and since then has done it 2 times and the dealer just greased it and it was good for a while and now its doing it again and was wondering if it just needs greased and is this common practice to grease this or is it bad and needs replaced before my warrenty is up next month. My fathers 2004 Cadilac Deville has never had this problem. Thanks

I had the clunk with my 00 SSEi and bought the Lube kit from GM for $11. I removed the intermediaate shaft and followed the instructions to a T. So far after 8k miles, no clunks.
The instructions have you use a plug in one end to force the grease all the way up the shaft as you compress it (hydraulics). Maybe the dealer did not do this and just coated what he could see/reach without removal?

Anyway, I have to beleive that if you do it yourself, you'll make sure that it'* buried in grease before you're done. I can certainly beleive the dealer mechanic might not be so patient.

I have read that the new shaft was improved, but it doesn't seem to be so, by accounts of those who had the replacement still getting a clunk. Obviously the angle for the shaft assembly is to great, and the grease doesnt stay where it belongs. I haven't had any problem yet @ nearing 24k miles. I consciously avoid sharp turning since hearing about the problem early in the cars use, and never have to parallel park. Maybe that helps? Anyways . It seems like it will clunk brand new if dry, so I would grease it myself as long as it stops the clunking. Rather than wait in the Mr Goodwrech waiting room one more God forsaken time. I mean..... I know the number of cinder blocks and ceiling tiles in the room. Before long, I will know the thread count in the Upholstered chairs there.

I called dealer today and I told them they had replaced it and greased it and if that was normal and they said it wasnt and that GM had come out with a new design of theboot so the grease would not leak out and said thy would put the new design in my ar since its still under warrenty and they said Ishouldent have any more problems with it si Im hopeing this cures it.

First it'* a new design, then it'* a new "magic lube", now a redesigned boot. I hope they get it right before I experience the "clunk" Patiently watching where this new fix goes with my fingers crossed on the endurance of my own Shaft. Why do I get the feeling someone is going to quote box this......

Ok so tell me if this is strange! About a week ago I started to get the "clunk" in my steering wheel, so I figure I need to grease it or it needs changed. So I call my buddy up who works on cars and I'm like I need my shaft greased he says ok bring it over and we'll go from there. I take the car to his house and he drives it and he feels and hears the "clunk" so we decide to go to his brother-in-law'* (kinda far from where we were) we pull up and his brother-in-law drives it and he says I cant feel anything we dont hear anything, so I'm like I swear it did it the whole way to his house and now it stopped doing it and hasnt since then. Has anyone else had this happen? where it does it for a while and then just stops? also is this new and improved shaft and boot a recall or tsb?
