Hi,
I have an 04 GXP and the other night when moving the cars around and the car was running for about 2 minutes, a Low Engine Coolant error flashed on to the DIC. It was late and dark but there was no coolant on the ground. I thought I would look in the morning but forgot at first when starting the car, well the error popped up within in a minute while still in the driveway. So I got a flashlight and checked the recovery/overflow tank (the only place you can) and the level seemed to be within a 1/2 inch of the cold level. So I put the cap back on and thought that was hard to turn and it had been easy to take off. So maybe it wasn't on tight to start. Have had the car for 3 months and 10000km (6000miles) and have not had this error before.
Made sure the cap was tight and have driven for 2 days with no reocurance,

So my question is, will a loose cap and no pressure cause this problem? Both times this occured the engine was stone cold so there would have been no chance for pressure to build.

Any Thoughts.

It very well could be, the cap is pressurized and having it not tightened may set off an error. Maybe the error code Low Coolant is used as a reminder to start with the cap and work backwards from there.

I took mine to the dealer and they found no leaks. The mechanic said the coolant level came low from the factory.

I haven't had the light come on since.

I never knew GM sold GXPs in Canada! I heard somewhere that starting '04 there would be no Bonnevilles sold here.

Not sure where the sending unit is on yours, but on mine, it'* on the passenger side of the back of the radiator (fan side).

That'* a bunch of hoey.

Thanks for the replys, I rechecked the fluid level in good lite and it is down about 3/4 inch, so I will top it up abit and thanks for the sensor location, I will check that to be sure nothing is loose. But it has not flashed a fault since I tightened the cap. It is weird not having a rad cap on the rad and checking the level in the overflow tank is a bit awkward with the tank at he back of the engine compartment.


Yes Jim, we are next door neighbours as cities go.

And yes indeed they do sell GXP'* here in Canada but when were looking for a new car not all Pontiac dealers in our area had Bonnevilles let alone GXP'*.

My GXP did the same thing. The coolant was only an inch or so low, but when I added that much, the light went out for good.

Had the same problem here and the dealer ordered a new bottle and sending unit for it. Haven't had time to get it to them yet.

Another GXP and another low coolant warning. I bought a bottle of dexcool the other day and topped it off and then had it pop a low coolant warning again tonight. It has gotten a little cooler today and that may be contributing and it was dark so I didn't check the level visually. I'll check in the morning before I crank and have the service guys look at it on visit tomorrow. If I hear anything differnet from "Mr Goodwrench" I'll let you know but sounds like a recurring problem for GXPs.
