Default Any other GXP owners with leaks??

Recently there were some leaks discovered on my car and I'm wondering if any other LD8 owners have noticed a similar trend.

The leaks include the timing cover, water pump, both the oil cooler and transmission lines, and I wet my pants alot. My car has about 52,000km (32,300 miles) and is gently driven. GM'* factory warranty is of course 3 years / 60,000km, but I'm over time wise by about six months. The oil cooler lines have already been replaced once (at about 42,000km).

My GMPP warranty covers the timing cover leak and water pump, but the others are considered "hoses" and are exempt. Although not obligated, GM Canada has stepped up and agreed to cover the oil cooler and transmission lines with my responsibility being the equivalent of my GMPP deductible. I must say I'm quite impressed. This will save me about $650.00. As for my local dealer (Stampede Pontiac), they have always treated me very well and I have many good things to say about them. I'm certain they were also a big part in having this extra work covered.

Anyway, back to my original question... Has anyone else had similar problems with this engine? I'm trying to find out if I have more problems that most, or if this is pretty normal. Many mechanics I've spoken to say "It isn't GM if it doesn't leak".

Default I have leaks!

Whne I bought the car new in Aug 2004 they had to replace the oil cooler line O-ring gaskets. That was in Germany by an Opel dealer.

I also notice my power steering pump and rack and pinion have been leaking. I've put at least a whole extra bottle of power steering fluid in it. I never did get the extended warranty (because it wasn't honored by Opel in Germany). I just went to a garage yesterday and to replace the power steering pump and rack and pinion will cost around $900 with labor. Dealer prob wants $1300. They have to drop the whole cradle and engine a little bit to get the rack and pinion out. Now this car has only 57,000 miles on it and that is going out? It was actually leaking already at the 45,000 mile level. I find it really sad that Pontiac'* flagship top of the line car at that time (Bonnevile GXP) has had as many problems as it has. Intermediate steering shaft, fog lamps, water leaks, etc.

I really like the car and I may go ahead and replace the rack and pinion when I scrape up enough cash after Christmas, but this really isn't something you should have to fix at 57,000 miles you know? Water pump, belt, filters, brakes, fluid changing etc is normal wear and tear and I have no problem with those, but all the other nit noids really bothers me.

It'* very unfortuante that you didn't have anyone who was able to honor an extended warranty. I usually don't purchase these, except for vehicles. It doesn't seem to take much to cover the cost if anything goes wrong.

I'm still very much at the stage where I have no intention of getting rid of my car because as with you, I really like mine. I'm curious if you discovered the leaks by drops on the pavement? The air deflector is big enough on these that mine didn't actually drip onto the ground. My friend has a shop and I take it in to wash the undercarriage on a regular basis. At the same time, I look for anything that is leaking or just isn't right. This is the only reason I caught my leaks. There were clearly hose fittings that were sweating and some oil running down the engine block from the timing cover, but nothing was gushing out.

I have an '04 GXP with 35,000 miles and I did have some leakage as well. The culpret as with yours was my oil cooler lines. They weren't leaking alot but enough for me to take notice of the spots in my driveway. At the same time I had to have both front hub bearings replaced because I had an awful clunk occuring when I pulled in and out of my driveway. Total for the job $1,580!!! But since I just bought the car about three months and I am only about 5 months over the warranty the dealership paid for everything. My dealership is great and they have treated me well.

Default Leaks

I have 42,000 on my 2005 GXP. I have noticed no oil leaks, but last weekend I smelled the strong odor of burning oil while backing in the garage. Did any of the others that have had leaks first notice their'* through smell instead of noticeable leaks? Maybe I should get this checked out.
