I picked one up from Walmart for a cool $30. I believe there is another module that I need to bypass my vats. Does anyone know where I can get it? Also any opinions on whether or not to install it. My mechanic already told me that its crap. (For 30 bucks I could not resist).

Found a universal vats bypass on ebay for $10, $18 with shipping. Pretty good deal.

Yes, they're sold at Target and Meijer; take your pick. Target sells the "Car and Driver" brand, which (I _think_) was a repackaged BulldogSecurity unit.

Well, in this particular case, I'm guessing that what you've got there is an RS-82, which does not have a Keyless Entry feature, only the starter functionality. If your car has power locks (with or without factory Keyless Entry; that doesn't matter), you might as well add a remote starter that provides Keyless Entry as well. The RS-102 model sold at Meijer has that feature, and Meijer also sells the VATS bypass box and spare keyring transmitters.

You can do the installation yourself if you're patient and good with electrical circuits. You'll have some disassembly and routing of wires to do; this is not an easy installation by any means. (This is the only product I've ever seen listed in the J.C. Whitney catalog that comes with a warning about how tough it is to install.)

Note that it doesn't take all six chapters to install the thing; I also rebuilt the gauge cluster and added an LED theft deterrent at the same time, so you may be able to skim through the first couple of posts above pretty quickly before we get into the meat of the thing.

It'* not, but it is not an easy project to install, and it requires skill sets that your mechanic does not have. He may be a wizard at swapping engines or pulling diagnostic codes and changing sensors, but installing the remote starter requires old-fashioned wire tracing, soldering skills, and more than a little problem-solving work involving how and where to route wires, how to dismantle and reassemble parts of the car that he'* never had to explore before, and that kind of thing. I'd be more surprised if you said he was gung-ho to take on the job.

Right (and I got one for $20 last week ); I think they're abandoning the product line. Probably tired of all the people who returned the opened packages after they realized what a big job it was, and the only places that are competent to install the systems themselves are selling their own products; consequently the over-the-counter Bulldog kits are really only a good deal for people who can install them by themselves. I've done three in recent memory, and have two more lined up for the near future. Good luck with yours!
