Default What'* the most inexpensive way to bypass the vats.

I need to find the most inexpensive and reliable way to bypass the vats on my 1993 SSEI? I want to install a remote starter on it. I really don't care about the threat of it being stolen because I live in a little country town in ohio , but I don't want to have it up and die on me either. I have a resistance of 2.35 ohms on the key. Does this sound right? Any help would be great!!!

Thanks!!!!

2.35K (2350) ohms sounds more like it.

The easiest and cheapest way to bypass the VATS is to just connect/solder the resistor to the "module" side of the VATS wires. This is to say that when you cut the two VATS wires, you would connect the resistor between the two that DO NOT go towards the steering column.

Many remote starters include a resistor pack that contains one of each possible VATS value. If the one you buy doesn't, you might be able to go to a shop that installs remote starters and ask them [very nicely] for an unused pack.

All the shops around here want an extra 50 bucks on top of installation in order to disable VATS for remote starts. If I did it myself, they couldn't charge me that, right?

the vats module is just the resistor

That'* about the going rate for an anti theft bypass.

I suppose you could permanently disable it as described above but make darn sure that they know that you have already disabled it. Approach it like you had a problem with the system and needed to disable it in order to drive.

I bet you'll find that some shops won't touch the car having that modification done though. they have a certain responsibility for warranty and reputation. If the starter didn't work at some point, they can easily say it'* due to your modifications and not fix the problem.

You were going to have one installed rather than self install Sully?

the vats module is just the resistor
The VATS module is more than just a resistor... the resistor is only an input to the module. The module has two outputs: one to enable the start relay and the other is a Pulse Width Modulated signal to the ECM. Without this signal, the ECM will not fire the injectors.

That'* correct. I don't know enough or have the patience to do it myself. So if anyone on here wants to make a few bucks installing one for me be my guest. I never though about the warranty part, but now that you mention it I'm probably better off just shelling the 50 bucks to have them bypass it.

use a resistor and a relay and do it right. won't cost over 5 bucks for parts and never give you problems

Who is close enough to you that this would be worth it? Maybe ToastedOats?
