Does a subwoofer have to be 4 ohms to work with a stock radio, or does it just have to match the amp. The subs Mick is looking at say 2 or 8 ohms.

Since the subs say 2 or 8 ohms, they would be dual 4 ohm voice coil. Wire the two coils on a sub in paralell for a 2 ohm load, or in series for a 8 ohm load.

is there one sub, or two
do you have am amplifier already?
what is the wattage rating on the amp, and on the subs.

the stock stereo amp will not really do a good job pushing a sub. It just doesn't put out enough RMS power.

and as far as the ohms go for the sub to work, they just need to be matched up with what the rating on the amp is.

If you could provide a link to the subs you purchased, and to the amp you have ( if you have one ) that could also help

Yea, I forgot to include the overall load on the amp, I was a little tired
I was only thinking of the load for each sub, but like Hans said, the overall load to the amp could be either 1 or 4 ohm..... if you have TWO dual 4 ohm voice coil subs.

you want an amp that supports 1ohm load, two dual 4ohm = 1ohm load or a 4ohm load. so the amp needs to have its maximum power at 1 or 4ohms. I'd look for something with 500-600 watts Continious power (rms) ignore the "max" ratings.

infinity makes some pretty good subs. a few years ago, a friend of mine had a pair of reference series and they sounded awesome.

I agree with Hans totally on this also. try to find an amp that is 600 watts RMS, and stable down to 1 ohm. Do some shopping, and find some amps.... I would expect to pay around $250 for a good amp, less for one that will just do the job. try to get an amp with a remote adjustable volume control, so the bass can be turned down at any time.

Anyway, he bought both new for $100.00 which I thought was an amazing deal. I guess Mick should budget about $100.00 for a used amp?
