Yes, you can replace the factory radio with an aftermarket with no problem. Metra has a subcompany called Axxess. These are digital interfaces that allow you to remove your factory radio without messing up your 2000 and up Bonneville'* computer. If you have OnStar, you'll need the GMOS-05. If you don't have OnStar, you'll need the GMRC-04. I called Metra and the only place that sells these adapters in Lafayette Radio: http://www.lafayetteradio.com/. The folks there are real friendly and helpful. I just got the GMRC-04 for my 2000 Bonnie and it works great. So, that should solve that problem. As far as cutting your dash, if you work it right, you won't need to. Trust me.

I looked on their site, I couldn't locate the 05 one. Have a link?

Sus.

We've discovered that some Bonneville'* (mine for one) does not need that GM-Link II type cable. I don't have Onstar, or HUD, or the Bose system in my car and I think that makes a difference. With replacing the stock radio the only thing I've lost is my door chime (open door, low gas, lights on reminder, etc..) and I dont care.

The relocation harness (allows you to connect an aftermarket radio in the dash while keeping the stock radio connected to the computer only in the trunk) was my backup plan, and was the only other harness available other than the one I ended up with. But for $85 I thought I would at least see if the $15 harness worked first.

Yeah, before I got the digital interface, I made my own relocation harness. I moved the stock radio to underneath the passenger'* seat. I bought the Metra harness and the reverse harness (the one that will plug into the back of the stock radio) and used 4 foot pieces of wire to connect the two. Then I added a CB speaker to the factory front left speaker wire to keep my door chimes because I completely rewired my who stereo system. Then, I found the digital interface and decided that I could save space in my car and still keep my chimes. I'm just real picky about keeping my chimes.

However, I heard that you need to either keep the stock radio connected to the car'* computer system or use the digital interface. Something about the car uses the radio as part of the computer'* BUS system. I don't know. I just played it safe by getting the digital interface.

While we appreciate you trying to help, please check the dates of the posts before replying, this thread is 10 years old, I doubt the original poster is still around here anymore.
