Alright so I've already figured out that 5.25" speakers sort of fit in the hole where the window motor would be if my car had power windows, however I need a spacer ring to make them sit level, as the hole is not entirely round nor quite large enough. I had to do something similar with the rear speakers, which are only partially installed 'cause I don't have another drill bit and I am not brave enough to attempt drilling upwards for the rear holes (can't reach them from the top) without first cutting the bit down short enough so it won't break my rear window.

But therein lies the problem, if I raise them up, the window crank will hit them, so I either need a really short window crank, or one that sticks out farther, I'd rather have a short one.

So, simply put, where might I source said shorter crank? I have pictures of the hackjob install I've done for now, the speakers are cheap Pioneers I got out of the junkyard for $10, I don't care about them, I'll be putting some Kicker KS'* up there with some baffles and maybe dynamat in the doors once I find a new drivers side door.





It'* a half assed mess, I know, but so is the interior of this car in a lot of places. It'* the polar opposite of most cars I see if this era, everything but the headliner is ruined. The radio is held in with duct tape folded over underneath it, 'cause I haven't bothered to get a fit kit when I need to pull the radio and run new wires later. They make a kit that'll fit a 89 custom cruiser wagon, but you need the dash panel with the 1.5DIN opening (I have it). And the speaker wiring is all temporary, part of the front speaker wire hangs down 'cause I didn't feel like routing it around those kick panel lights. I'll swap them for LED bulbs and heat wrap the new speaker wire so it doesn't get melted. This was all an experiment to make sure I can fit in nicer speakers, and a stop gap so I had something other than silence. Other than the rear tweeters blowing and me removing them, it'* been worth the $20 for the four old Pioneer blue cone "OEM Upgrade" speakers. I've got it figured out, except for the window cranks, I'd still like to open my window when I have the speakers properly spaced out.

Probably be easier to pull the door panels and mount them on the inside.

it would be better if you did kickpanels made out of fiberglass or mdf. then you can do 6.5s and tweeters on the a pillars which sounds way better

Would have to move the parking brake pedal most likely, that is far more difficult than sourcing door window cranks.


I don't think there is enough room to do it that way, even then the hole isn't big enough to actually fit them on the inside, so the one of two ways to do that would be to use slightly smaller speakers, 4'*, or 4x6'* and make some plates then cover them in a 5.25" grill 'cause I've already cut a hole roughly that size in my door panels, or hope there is a hole hiding behind the door panels that is large enough to make that work. I mean bolting them in if I got them to fit from the inside would be no big deal, just glue some lock nuts to the backs of the speakers and carefully thread the bolts through until they are tight enough, but again, don't even know how I'd get them in the doors in the first place.

there should be a hole big enough to get the regulator in behind the trim. i have never seen anything different than stock handles. you can convert to power and put the buttons anywhere you like. i have even sen where they use the handle with a micro switch for up and down for stock appearances.

I'll have to look, I can maybe use a thin 1/4" spacer trimmed for the door to make the speaker mount flush from the inside, I'll check the drivers side door this weekend. That might buy enough space to allow a speaker grill. Alternatively I may grind a little metal so the speaker basket fits in the hole properly, then it would be a flush mount with room for thin speaker grills. I'll just have to look and see.
