Default What Fits?

Well, I just got my new (to me that is) 96 SE and it'* time to start bring it back as it were.

My first priority is to replace the factory tunes.

I've got the factory AM/FM/CD head unit with equalizer and factory speakers. I noticed that the space the radio uses is not a common "din" size hole, so would need an install kit of some kind.

The 6x9'* in the back look pretty wimpy with their tiny magnets and thin paper cones. I haven't pulled the door panel yet to see what the two-piece speakers in the door are like, but I would imagine much the same quality as the 6x9'*.

I've got some equipment in the basement just aching to be used. I've got a couple nice Kenwood amps (one 4-channel @ 280W and one 2-channel @ 120W) and a 9-band EQ with sub controls.

I would like to keep the factory covers for the speakers in place.

Now the questions...

What size speaks can I put in the front doors?

Can I modify the 6x9 holes in the back deck to take subs of some kind and still keep the factory covers or can someone recommend a good 6x9?

Who makes a good mounting kit for the head unit?

Are there line-level outputs on the head unit I could simply hook up to?

Can the steering wheel controls be used with any of the after-market head units?

Okay, I'll stop for now, that should get me going and I don't want to bug too much to start with.

i just did a compete sound system overhaul, new door speakers, as well as rear deck, ran my own wires to the doors, etc.

front door speakers are 5.25inch, and tweeter (dont remember the size)
i put 4x6 plate speakers instead of the 5.25 because i already had them and they could handle more watts. Since it was a plate speaker, there were many drill holes they provided so it fit just fine and snugly. youll find when you take of the door trim theres lots of room for doing things. one member i recall but 6.5 inch speakers in.

as for the 6x9s, when i did my research here on the site many people had to modify the aftermarket 6x9s they put in to make them fit well, i had to as well but it worked out. hardest part was removing rear deck to get to the speakers. i was able to keep stock speaker covers.

As for a mount..it depends on what you are looking for, there are Walmart mounts that allow your radio to be sticking out about an inch, flush mounts...and then there'* HUmount.com

Retaining the steering wheel controls can sometimes be done with a converter by the stereo manufacturer or with a PAC SWX box. Both are good viable options.
