Default 96 SE Factory Radio Backlight problems

I am having a problem with my factory radio/cd with equalizer. Early morning before it'* 100% daylight out, the display is so dim I can barely see it. later in the day..going to lunch at noon....plenty bright. I assume what ever auto dims the dash is dimming the radio more that it should?

I had a problem the other night where the radio display didn't light at all for a couple of minutes then it came on and worked just fine.

I usually do not turn my headlights on manually...just let them go on and off based on the sensor. I know that if I turn my headlights on during the day...the dashborad and radio display dim. Seems like the raddio washes out almost completely...doesn't matter how bright I set the control...still very dim/unreadable

What should I be looking for?
