Default Poor AM radio reception

I have a 95 SSEi. I still listen to AM radio sometimes. I just replaced the antenna (old one didn't go up/down). I bought a GM factory antenna from the dealer and it looks exactly like the one at Pep Boys for 40 bucks. I had to make some mods to make it fit. It works great for FM, but with AM, the reception is POOR.

I can only get 3-4 of the major powerful stations locally. If I hit a bump in the road, it may cause static...or if I have static, a bump in the road may make the static go away. Sometimes when there is static, if I turn on a turn signal, it may make the static go away.

I do have the antenna grounded well and mounted securely. I have checked the connections as well.

Is the antenna defective? Any other ideas?

Check the antenna cable. If it is cracked you wont notice it on FM but it will greatly reduce AM.
