sub and amp can be bought for 300.
box could be made for less than 50. IDK how much it would cost to buy, I have never bought one.
HU you can spent anywhere from 150-... a decent one can be gotten for 200.
Personally I would leave 150-200 for wires and other ascessores needed for doing an install.
So at this point with a 1200 budget you have 400-the box= what you have to spend on speakers.
it is all what you want to do.

corvette crazy thanks for that monetary breakdown along w/ everyone elses help as well. I've just done some research and my initial plan probably isn't the best. But referring to corvette crazy i guess w/ the speakers all i want to do is replace the tweeters and 5.25'* in the door, the 6*9'*, and both tweeters in the back.I wanted the 2 way audio bahn 6*9'* because the tweeter can be removed from the speaker and placed in the area alotted for tweeters in the rear deck

there is nothing wrong with your initial plan. it CAN be done.
I dont want to persuade you from what YOU want to do, because in the end, YOU have to like it, because YOU are driving your car.
There is nothing wrong with your plan for the sub, amp, HU and new speakers.
edit: where are you located, there may be people near by who have either done an audio install or would be willing to help you build boxes to save money.

If you dont care what the sub sounds like then you can go with just about anything.
I am a big fan of pioneer or alpine, I have owned 2 pioneer HUs and both have been bulletproof.
A custom box will cost you $100-$300 depending on the shop and if you are going ported, then the costs will go up if you want it tuned correctly.
As far as comps go I would stick with an entry level $150 or so set of components and a small amp and remove the rear fill, but if you like rear fill you can put some 6x9s or some decent coaxes in the back if thats your thing.

Hans: my 300 estimate was by only checking ebay for new items. sub was like 150 and amp like 100.
I would suggest either a 2 or 4 channel amp and speakers if you are replacing all the interior ones, but you do NOT have to.
