How hard would it be to convert my front speakers to 6X9'*? Is it just a matter of cutting the door to fit them or is it even worth the trouble and just get some 5.25'*? Thanks for the help!!

Let'* say you modified the door and got a 6x9 to fit (which is possible). The problem would be a vibrating door panel. That cheap plastic isn't strong enough to hold an excurting 6x9, and no amount of dynomat would help with that. I think what you'd have to do is mount the speaker to the actual door frame somehow, and then dynomat all of the door paneling. Who knows how tought the mod would be, and even if successful, if other parts of the door (the window, when it'* rolled down, etc.) would rattle.

why would you ever want to do something like that?


just get some good comps and a decent amp and you should be set.

someone here has a spare set of door panels with 6X9' in them. I dunno if they are installed in he car or not

I think it would be more worth your time to make it fit 6.5'*, you'll get better sound quality from those than the 6X9. It would be worth the effort if you are looking to do some competition. Otherwise changing out the door speakers is a chore in itself. :?

Thanks for the replies. Exactly how hard would it be to "make" the doors fit 6.5 inchers? Ive heard it was a simple swap with no trouble, and ive heard it is a pain in the a$$. I called my local best buy and they said a "custom" installation is 20 bucks more per door on top of a normal install of 40 bucks coming up to about 80 bucks to install 6.5 speakers. Worth the $$$ or not?? Thanks again!

20$ a door? That'* not bad considering it would be somewhat custom work. All you would need to do to make the 6.5 fit in the 5.25 is make a plate that would hold the speaker and maybe cut the hole in the door so the 6.5 doesnt smack it on excursion.
It'* up to you on how much $$ you want to spend to do it. I'd do the work myself and spend any saved cash for some great speakers.

The jeep Grand Cherokee with the infinity system uses 6x9s in the doors, and the front sound stage has INCREDIBLE bass. no need for subs in that thing at all!

If you dont mind not being able to remove the speaker and tray part of your door panel, then just put alot of liquid plastic in there along the edges and get it solid on tehre so nothing rattles. use your imagination to find ways to prevent rattling.

But i really think you should try this with some good 6x9'*, and tell us how it went. You may need a component tweeter to get good clear highs with a cross over. But im sure the results would be more than impressive

OK, has anyone else here actually replaced their door speakers?

I have and the 6.5"* (in the car now) fit without any modifications whatsoever, they just screwed into the 5.25" mounting holes (with a little help). I can tell you that my passenger side door panel just started to rattle a few days ago, and I'm not sure what it is yet. It might be the speaker (they are kinda crappy) or just something rattling in the door. I'm not sure but I'm going to take it a part and find out this week and I'll get back to you.

As far as 6x9"* in the front that would be f'ing sweet, but like someone said it would just rattle your door panel like crazy.

seems like there wouldnt be much room from the magnet of the speaker to the door. it would be close in my opinion.
