I need some advice on swapping out the rear speakers on my 2004 GXP. It has the Monsoon system, I am happy with the mid'* and highs but the bass from the back speakers is a bit lacking. I have been reading the other rear speaker topics in the forum. Should I go with the 2 ohm instead of the 4 ohm speakers? What wattage should I go with? From the other discussions it sounds like the monsoon systems came with 2 ohm speakers? So if I want more bass, which speaker mfg. should I go with? Infinity, Pioneer, Alpine, Polk Audio? I drive a 2006 Buick Allure for a company car and the bass is much more than my GXP. I can only have the bass on 5 (goes up to 7). With the Monsoon I have the bass up to 6 and it is no where near the bass levels of the basic gm system in the Buick. I went to one dealer and he said I would be dissappointed with just swapping out the rear speakers. In my other car I swapped out the original gm 6x9 speakers for a set of JBL 3 ways and it made a big difference. Can I get some feedback on everyones expeiences with just swapping the 6x9'*? Thanks

The problem is not the speakers, it'* the frequencies that are being filtered by either the amp or a crossover somewere in that system.
Either that or the speakers are worn out or ripped, but I think you would be able to hear that.

Factory speakers typically have a lower sensitivy and usually produce better bass but crappy highs.

My advice just add an Amp and Sub(*)

I might be able to help you decide, I just put the 2 ohm Infinity 9622i'* in my monsoon SSEI.

After my wife drove it for a week and broke them in, I am VERY happy from the bass, a little bit suprised, someone on here described it as near sub levels.

I can rattle the plastic panels in the car with the rears, it doesn't rattle the license plate like the 2 rockford 10'* I have in my aurora however.

If your looking for more bass than the 2 Infinity'* put out I suggest the infinity basslink for a system that doesn't eat real estate. I had one in my Grand Am and it put out just enough to rattle the license plate.

BTW the rears are filtered but thats not why they sound crappy, I can't figure out why for only 100 retail I can put in such good speakers to make great bass and GM can't do it wholesale.

The 9622i'* are a 2 way system meaning they are intended to also put out treble and mids, while you won't get any from them and the tweeters in them are a waste in our case, they sound great and they cause no problems being in the car.

A perfect sollution would be a 6x9 woofer but I haven't seen an aftermarket one for 18 years.

If you really want to go all out and have near stock looks, custom install 2 8" subs in the stock locations with amp.

Whatever you do, DO NOT GET 4 ohm speakers, you'll be ticked with the lack of bass.

Sure, they're 4-ohm, but they're 6x9 woofers....

Besides, if you want a 2-ohm load to the amp, just wire 'em in series.

It begs the question if the Monsoon amp has a mono out for the bass portion, at least. That'd be way cool. Then you could bridge those two channels, and you'd be good to go.

Yes they can be wired in series, however, if the amp puts out 35rms/per channel/@2ohms, (guessing at the wattage) if you wire in series you only end up with 17 watts per piece.

No the amp cannot be bridged, if you do it won't work at all, and makes a loud feedback type noise.

Its not mono, because it can be balanced.

I have a 05 SLE and it has the stock am/fm/cd/cassette and i had the same problem. I went and had them custom build a box that is flush with the right rear side of the trunk. they installed a 10" JL and on the rear left they custom built a box for the amp and all you see is the top of it. its mounted sideways. they did a very good job with matching all the carpet and it looks like it is all stock. And it sounds real good with only that 1 sub.
