Is it possible to get a factory keyless entry and/or remote starter for my 94 SE?
has anyone done this... and is it feasible/cost effective compared to aftermarket?

You can usually get after market cheaper then factory. I'm sure will knows though.

I agree on that one Dillon. I paid just over $250 for my aftermarket. But I had them wire up the door locks, trunk and my signal flashers as extras to the system.

The factory installed version is going to more.

If you have power locks in your '94, there'* some possibility that you already _have_ keyless entry and don't know it (due to some previous owner or dealer losing or swiping the keyring remotes). I think if you can find an AU0 code in your trunk sticker, you already have keyless entry, and just need to get yourself a new keyring transmitter.

The factory did not offer a remote starter option, although they're promising those as factory options in the next year or two. I saw a mention of this in the Chicago Tribune a month or so ago.

It'* a very labor-intensive job; the hardware itself is relatively cheap. You can get keyless entry as a standalone kit, although it'* more easily found bundled in with remote starters and alarm systems as well, since (1) it'* not that much extra circuitry for the controller to handle, and (2) the car it'* being installed on probably has keyless entry already, and you don't want to make the owner carry around two remotes on his key ring, one to unlock the car and the other to start it. I would recommend going the remote-starter route if you're not interested in adding an aftermarket alarm, since there'* some coolness factor in having your car start itself, you will often also get a remote-control trunk and interior-light capability along with it, and it adds to the resale value.

If you're good at working on automotive electrical systems, you can install the kits yourself in a day or so, but if you're not _really_ confident at wiring and troubleshooting, have an installation place you trust do it for you.

I don't think there'* a whole lot of difference between the kits you can buy over the counter and those that are only available via professional installation, except that the pros probably get a break on the wholesale pricing since they don't need fancy packaging, an installation video and that kind of thing.

I think so... You should have a sticker in your trunk listing all the three-character option codes for the equipment on your car. It might be stuck to the spare-tire cover under the carpet, if you don't see it under the trunk lid. In the list of codes (there is usually a _lot_ of them) should be one for AU0, if you have keyless entry. As far as I know, there is no other easy way to tell whether your car is so equipped.

(Actually maybe there is, at least for 1993, since on that year and probably some earlier years as well, jumpering the upper-right socket of the ALDL connector to the lower-left socket was how you would program the system. If you do that on your car and its lock system goes *clunk*-*clunk*, you have a keyless-entry system talking to you.)
