Default How Do You Remove Front Speakers From 1990 Bonneville?

What kind of tool(*) do you need to get the speakers out of the front dash? Do I need to remove the dash pad? Sorry, I don't have access to the service manuals. I would like to replace the stock 4x6'* with something better but can't seem to get them out easily. Especially the driver'* side. Thanks!

I don't have those speakers, so I don't know if this is 100%, but you should only have to remove the [colour of your interior] fabric mesh grille that covers them. And there should be four bolts. If that doesn't work, yes you would probably have to remove the dash pad. You may want a member who has removed these to chime in, to confirm.

IF you are lucky, you can take out the speakers without taking the dash apart. For some reason GM did a crappy moulding job and there is sheet metal covering one or more of the screws. Its a squeeze but sometimes it can be done. Also I would suggest that if you go with good speakers, to upgrade the stereo. The original one is OK for 15 year old stock radio but even a newer stock radio would sound much better.

Default Front Speaker Removal 1990 Bonneville

JR and Phoenix - thanks for the info guys. Sounds like the dash pad need so to come off like I thought. The detailed instructions are great! I'd like to hear how you got speakers in the doors also... I didn't know that was an option on these cars. I replaced the head unit already when my OEM CD player died. I did the back speakers also with 6x9 Pioneer coaxials. I spend alot of time in this car (3 hrs per day) so, when I do the front'* I'll probably upgrade the whole system again. Thanks again!

SSE'*.. or a few SE'* with the "Performance Sound" option, eliminated the 4x6s in the dash, and added the amp for the rear 6x9s.. and added two 3.5" on the rear deck, and two more on the front doors. Plus, I believe there is also an amp for the 5 1/4s in the door... but don't quote me on that one. I know there is an amp for the rear 6x9s..

So you don't have 5 1/4s in your front doors? Ouch.. so the lower model audio only had 4 speakers?

Wow, that'* strange.. because I have 8 speakers. It'* amazing how you can go from a 4 speaker system, all the way up to an 8 speaker system. And.. not to brag, but my stereo sounds damn good. I mean, it wouldn't win a competition with any aftermarket systems.. but put up against other factory systems.. I vote mine. My mom'* vdub already blew her amps and speakers in the 7months she has had the car. All my speakers work great after 16 years .
