is there any fix it yourself tips on the delco cd radios. Or i suppose a cheap place to take a look at it? I have 2 7 band eq radios and have some sort of trouble with both. I took a look and both had at least 2 stickers saying they've been "remanufactured".

What sort of problems are you having?

one gives me an err 20 i believe, doesn't even read cds
the other clicks and doesn't read cds all the time and doesn't eject all the time.
i thought it had something to do with the level of the car at the moment and the temperature, but those don't seem to be the problem any more.

If you're good with small tools and the things are out of warranty anyway, I think you have nothing to lose by opening them up for a look-see. They're probably just as susceptible to oxidized pin connectors and circuit-board connectors as the dash displays are, and I got mine back to life (the compass and DIC displays) just by disassembling and reassembling them.

I used to marvel at the engineering of the old AC-Delco stereos and cassette players, as compared to some of the aftermarket stuff. I mean, where an aftermarket analog stereo would use a string to drag a pointer along the tuner scale, the AC-Delco units used slip clutches, gears and pullies instead. They might fry circuits or whatever, but the mechanicals always seemed pretty bulletproof. It was also much easier to replace broken or slipping drive belts in AC-Delco cassette decks as opposed to the third-party stuff.

Now if they would just stop soldering those stupid fiddly little bi-pin dial lamps onto the circuit boards I'd be a lot happier...

i jsut took mine apart to replace the lightblb behind the LCD and they are pretty open on the inside, just make sure that the theftlock isnt on when you unplug it, otherwise you are screwed.

Yes, the bi-pin lamp I was talking about is in a place that really makes no sense, in those dime-a-dozen stereos and cassette decks they used from the early '80'* all the way through the mid-90'*. If you manage to get the faceplate off without breaking the little snap tabs on the sides (plus a couple in the middle, to the right of the two control *****), you'll find two or three half-size wedge-base bulbs like #37, and those are easy to replace once you get a grip on them because they just pull out of their sockets, and if it'* easier to get at them from the back, you can just untwist the entire socket -- no problem.

But then way over on the right side, behind the "Set" programming button on the faceplate, is this annoying, hard-to-find, big-fat-pain-to-replace, soldered-in bi-pin minibulb that'* supposed to light up the right half of the faceplate. When it burns out, the whole right side of the stereo disappears into the gloom. I can't understand why the heck they had to go and put that thing in like that. I've only had to do one of those %$^& soldered bulbs so far, and I hope I don't have to do any more for a long time.

i ahd a multimeter out the other day and read the bulb at about 6-8 volts. I only have one on the inside of mine that i can find, its soldered in behind the LCD screen

Ayup, there is only one of that type in there. Makes you wonder why they bothered! I wish it was as easy to replace as the others are...
