Default Possible MP3 and Headunit Upgrade

I would really like to be able to connect an mp3 player to my car'* headunit. I have a 2000 SLE without the Bose system. Is there anyway to do this without an FM Modulator? Do I need a new HU to get decent sound quality from the mp3 player? If I do need a new HU, what size fits the opening? I am not a fan of the small HUs in the large openings, no offense to anyone, just preference. Does the stock opening in my car accept a double din HU? I know next to nothing about car audio and am trying to learn so if these questions don't even make sense I apologize.

Why not go with a modulator ? your still going to need the 10-VW40 and 41 antenna adapter..

I heard that the sound quality is poor. I am fairly impressed with the output quality from the stock component system and don't want poor quality input. Thanks for the info on the installation kit and the fact that it is a double DIN.

If your car came with a CD changer, you can substitute an Mp3 player in place of the changer. There are a number of adapters that will allow you to operate an iPod using the stock head unit buttons. It will also work from the steering wheel buttons.

If you want to stay with a stock heat unit you and your car didn't come with the changer, you can buy one from www.replacementradios.com. If you go that route, you will need to get a dealer to unlock the theftlock feature.

That all depends on the modulator. Even the best ones can only offer sound quality that is slightly above FM.

My car doesn't have a cd changer but that is good to know about using the steering wheel controls to control the ipod.

I have a similar desire as you. Ultimately, I will likely buy an OEM head unit that controls a changer.

If you want maximum bang for your buck and minimum installation time, get an adapter for the cassette. I have one and it sounds just fine. You will have to control the Mp3 player itself rather than using the buttons on the radio though. Plus it will work with any Mp3 player, not just iPod.

This is what I got:

I think a cassette is better then a modulator, i've tried both, the modulator was marginally better then a transmitter, but still had sub-par SQ.

Frankly direct input is the only thing I would consider, but then again, i demand my speakers be made from kevlar as well
