Default price question

I was at our stereo place today. I found some subs I want, and was wondering if this price sounds good. It is 2 Kicker 12" FreeAir subs mounted in a carpeted box for $180 new. I think it sounds good, b/c at this particular place, just a carpeted box for 2 12s is $60. Any input? (if you wanna make a suggestion for cheap subs, I want either Kicker or Pioneer)

Well before you just run out and get 12'*...what kind of music do you listen to? Are you looking more for huge bass or bass accuracy?

My uncle really knows what music I listen to, he listens to the same type, rock, and he said for rock music like we like it, 12s are the best shot, that'* what he had.

I know I shouldn't just go cheap, but I don't really want an awesome system right now, just better than what I have. I'm currently job hunting, and I have a few things that really need tending to b4 I blow my whole wad on a stereo system.

If you need to buy other things, buy them.

I bought a high quality subwoofer for around $130 shipped online. It normally retailed for double that. SPend $20 on some MDF and you have a better subwoofer then that by far.

Saying "12'*" are better for rock isn't right. The size is only one dimension, and it'* not even important. A quality 18 will be better in almost every way then a cheap *** 10. Motors, surround material and size, throw, cooling, power handling, all matter.

Just to clarify some things, surface area DOES in fact matter. The bigger the sub, the more surface area, which means more air displacement. The soundwaves that come from the sub varies by the size of the cone area. A smaller sub in a SEALED box will sound much better since the bass response is tighter and more accurate but requires more power to push.

A ported box which can be tuned to a specific subs frequency response, is not as accurate, but extends the bass response making it more boomy.

If the surface area (size) of the sub dont matter, then all of the subs would be the same size.

If you want a cheap setup for now, go with a pair of 10'* in a sealed box of proper size, or a single 12' in a sealed box and you will be happy.

The thing to remember is your amp purchase will depend on your sub purchase.

ie: If you buy a dual 2 ohm sub, you can wire them for 1 ohm or 4 ohm to an amp so make sure the amp can handle the ohm load.

same if you buy a dual 4 ohm sub. you can either wire it 2 ohm or 8 ohm to an amp so make sure your amp can handle the load.
