How do I replace factory amplified speakers?
Hey everyone. I picked up a set of Pioneer 6x9s the other day. Was getting all ready to install them when I remembered... ****, my car (1994 SSEi) has factory amplified speakers. To make 100% sure I popped open one of the rear grills, sure as ****, 4 wires.
I thought that for sure places that do stereo installations would have the harness I needed, neither Tweeters or Best Buy had 'em, they had them for the normal unamplified speakers, but not for mine.
A browse through the net didn't turn up much information, so I ask here. Is there a harness available to allow the usage of aftermarket speakers in the '94 SSEi? I don't mind losing the factory amplification, I have a Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X859 pushing power to them. Or if there'* no adaptor available, which wires should I splice into the replacement speakers, and do I have to ground the amplification wires, or can I just tape them off?
Any and all help and information is appreciated.

you can just hook them up from the radio. That is the way I have my hooked up. all I did was taped up the factory wires and that was it. All you have to do is run new wires from the radio back. Hope this help

If you have bucket seats, its under the center console, just forward of the shifter. Reach in from the front (up near the gas pedal) and you'll find it. It'* about twice the size of a pack of cigarettes, and has heat-sink fins on it. A single connector if memor serves. Basically right below the stereo, but sitting on the hump under the console.

That'* funny, because in my old 1993 SSE it was between the back speakers screwed to the rear dash from the trunk side. I know in my 1992 it is right under the radio/in the console. Wierd!!!

Here are the colour codes for the rear wiring in the amplified speaker system (U85) in my 96 SSEI.
They may be the same for other years.
blue/white wire + to "sub" voice coil of left 6X9
green/black wire - to "sub" voice coil of left 6X9
dark green wire + to "sub" voice coil of right 6X9
blue/black wire - to "sub" voice coil of right 6X9
brown wire + to "full range" voice coil of left 6X9 and to tweeter
yellow wire - to "full range" voice coil of left 6X9 and to tweeter
dark blue wire + to "full range" voice coil of right 6X9 and to tweeter
light blue wire - to "full range" voice coil of right 6X9 and to tweeter
You can cut the "sub" wires, extend them and run them into another amp and into a sub box and it will be controled by the gain control mounted under the radio.
The "fullrange" wires can be connected to new 6X9 coaxes, or better still a new 6X9/tweeter separates combo.

I have a question about the factory speakers. Is it possible to use the factory speakers with a Sony headunit. This is on the 96sse. It has the Bose amp in the center console & a little black box screwed to the rear deck in the trunk next to the driverside speaker. They want to upgrade the radio & keep the speakers, that are in it.
Is there anyway of doing this?

Yeah its possible just hook up the sony with a wiring harness from best buy and it will send the signal from the sony HU to the factory amp then to the 6x9'*
