Default OEM Delco CD overheats and E20?

So, the '99 Grand Prix developed a problem where it wants to E20 when playing CDs, so I bought an eBay special, reportedly from a 2000 Grand Am and swapped it in. Well, this unit plays CDs for a few tracks and "fuzzes out" (like a radio station) and reports an E20. Ejecting the CD, the CD is VERY hot. After a half hour or so, the CD player will play a couple more tracks before repeating its "fuzz" and E20.

Any thoughts? I'm seeing what the seller whats to do with this unit, but it is a NICE unit, and if its a quick fix, I'd prefer to fix it. I know a E20 is the lens focusing... but I can't figure out why the unit is running so hot.

Thanks,

BKNJ

Do you have an external amp connected to it?

E20: Focus Error

Cause(*): The CD player cannot focus on the disc or there is an internal focus problem.

Correction(*): Try cleaning the disc or using a new disc. Make sure the disc is loaded correctly. The road could be too rough or there is too much humidity. If the problem is not corrected, service the unit at an ACDelco(R) Service Center.

Since you said that it works on new, store bought cd'* i don't think its the dirty disk problem, it sounds more like an internal focus means that the laser is out of alignment (you can realign it but you have to take the radio apart), or that the laser is dirty. In the later case you could get a cd laser cleaner for about $12. it'* a disk that has a bunch of small brushes on it, you just put it in the cd player and let it run it'* course. Some cd cleaners have solution, some don't. I don't think any one is better than the other.

Try the cleaner first, it'* cheaper and quicker.

Mike: No external amp. Stock, stock, stock across the board on this car.

JW: I don't think its a CD problem, but an overheating problem that is causing the focus to be lost. Both units have already seen a CD cleaner with no luck.

I've just never seen a unit get so hot.

I can't tear the new unit down, as I am in negotiations with the seller... but I tore the old unit down and was happy to find a small piece of cellophane or glue near the lens assembly. Hopefully that was the cause of the E20... so I can fix the bulb and send it back into service... the rest of the unit was pretty clean and tight. I really don't see how the lens can be realigned. I really wish I could find a good Delco CD repair link.

do you listen to alot of burned cd'*? that will cause the laser to work harder to read the data and play discs. It also happens to dvd players. If you dont have onstar you may want to consider buying an aftermarket unit. they are made to read mp3 discs. If of course that is your problem
