Default Back Light Bulb for 98 Stereo

The back light bulb for my '98 stereo burned out so I searched the archives here and found out about the $20 bulbs that you can buy on-line. I didn't want to spend that much on the old stereo so I removed the old buld and soldered in a marker side bulb. Has anyone else tried this? It works fine for now, but I am wondering how long it will last.

I only checked it in day light so far and it looks good. The dimmer lowers the intensity as it should.

As promised, I am reporting back on the night time performance. The bulb intensity seems fine at night. I am pleased with the look. I expect the bulb to last OK, since these >$1 bulbs perform quite well in other, automotive applications. I just hope that it doesn't get too hot. I guess time will tell.
