Default Problems with remote start

My girlfriend has a 96 or 97 se, and her family had a remote starter put in it last christmas. Ever since then, the car will refuse to start 5% of the time, whether with the key or the remote. Anybody had a similar problem? I'm not gonna fix it, just curious if others have had this prob.

Unfortunately we'd need way more detail here to say whether anybody else'* problem is the same as yours -- to begin with, what brand and model do you have? When it doesn't start 5% of the time, what exactly _does_ happen? (e.g. Does the Security light come on and stay on? Does the starter motor crank the engine or not?)

I would certainly just fix the remote starter rather than pay somebody to remove it, because all it does is bypass your ignition switch, with various sensor wires that go elsewhere to lock or unlock the car, deactivate the security system before cranking, etc. You also probably have wiring out to your brake-lamp switch and to a pin switch under the hood, to provide a quick engine kill if you step on the brake (e.g. to prevent someone from driving off in it while you're inside a store) and to prevent accidental starting if the hood is open. But all that wiring is for monitoring the car as safety backups; nothing is interfering with the car beyond bypassing the ignition switch. When your key'* in the ignition, the remote starter can't interfere at all.

If it doubles as a security system of its own, with its own ignition kill circuitry, then that'* a little more complicated, but since you're talking about a failure to _start_ the car 5% of the time, I'll assume it'* not a security feature that'* having problems here.
