Actually Component sets are made up of the following:

Seperate tweeter (mountable in a seperate location for better sound quality)
Mid Bass driver
Passive crossover block

See the link:
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?...roduct_ID=1237

2, 3 & 4 ways are Coaxial speakers like 6x9, 6.5, 5.25 etc.

A 2 way has 1 tweeter in the center of the Midbass driver.
Its like having two speakers joined together.
See the link below
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?...roduct_ID=2807

A 3 way has 2 tweeters in the center of the Midbass driver.
Count the speakers...2 tweeters + 1 midbass = 3 way
See the link below
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?...roduct_ID=2808

A 4 way is the same as the other examples above but it has 3 tweeters + the Midbass.

2 way

unless you love high notes then get 3 ways.

4 ways are a marketing ploy imo.

I've never seen a 2 or 3 way component set.
Some manufacturers market there Coaxials as 2 or 3 way components, but it isn't really because its a coaxial (the tweeters are attached). Its just a marketing ploy.
Just because they include a passive crossover doesn't make it a component, I don't care what there marketing department wants to call it.

A true component set is were the tweeter is totally seperate from the midbass.

One of my favorite component sets are these:

Holy overkill lol

I wasn't aware that these were available. I haven't seen any 3 way components until recently.
All the custom shops I've been to don't carry anything like that, even the high end shops that do show cars, sound comps, etc.

Today I took a closer look at work and I saw we sell as set of Fosgates that you can remove the 2 tweeters and mount them seperately (3 way coaxial/components)
They sound alright but the Infinitys are still my choice they sound brighter and more natural..............Silk dome tweeters all the way.

Best advice when buying any speaker, is listen to them and see what sounds best to you. Everyones hearing & taste is different.

I agree with Dutch listen to the speakers. I think Crutchfield will even give you like X amount of days to try them in your car. If you don't like them you can send them back.

Also you may want to check into Boston Accoustics, and MB Quart as viable solutions to the component conundrum.

Happy shopping,

Tim
