I'm looking to put some new speakers in my '01 SE. I already have an aftermarket Pioneer HU, and will be getting a nicer, newer one here shortly (for free from a buddy ).

I'm looking for a good idea for different speakers than the factory stocks. From just looking at the grills, it appears they are 5 1/4'* on the fronts and 6x9'* on the back. Is this right?

Any suggestions on good speakers to use with just a Pioneer deck (no external amp, for now at least). 200W max range (50x4). I have done full stereo installs before with amps, HU, subs, and the works, but not looking to go crazy. Just looking for something better. I guess I'm getting older... lol

Also, on the fronts, do I have to pull the door panels to replace the speakers? Or will they come out through the front somehow? Same for the rear deck - do I have to go from the trunk to pull them, or will they come out through the top, inside the car?

Any tips/suggestions would be appreciated! Pics would help a ton too! Thanks for any info.

your pioneer HU will be lucky to put out over 20 watts to each speaker. most stock HU'* put 5-15 watts.


I'd stick with some infinity/pioneer/alpine coaxials..cant go wrong there

Yeah, I know the RMS is the real important value. The HU I'm getting is probably 20W-25W RMS per channel. I don't know exactly yet as I don't know the model number of the deck, or else I'd know for sure. I was just basically wondering if anyone had some good ones they run just on a aftermarket HU, without any external amps.

Ok, so the best way sounds like removing the rear deck for getting at the rears. Anyone know of a post with instructions on doing this? I haven't looked at it yet, but imagine it would be something like the door panels?

Yea you have to remove the door panels to get to the front speakers (which are 5 1/4 inch) they are literally screwed onto the door the door panel. To get to the back speakers all you have to do is remove the grills and then unscrew them from the brackets, dont try to take the brackets out with the speakers still attached to the brackets, you wont be able to get them out that way. Im using a Clarion ARX-757z tape deck unit which is roughly 14 watts RMS. You can use any speaker you want but the more wattage you have going to them, the better they will sound not saying that they will sound crappy at all but you get the idea. I'm using a pair of Altec Lansing 6x9'* which need 60 watts minimum to run and 120 watts maximum and sound incredible and the bass is phenominal. your car is VERY different than 10ghz, speaker sizes and everything are totally changed

please do not give technical info on cars of which you are not familiar with, you are giving false procedures here... and false specifications, the 00s have 6 1/2s

If you're still willing to do that for me, it would make my life easier when I get some new speakers. It doesn't have to be super detailed, just enough to point me in the right direction. Thanks a ton!

Let me know if i mis-worded something or you get confused

Removing Door Panels:
the front door panels are held on by body clips, start by removing the small piece at the top of the door panel where the side view mirror is located and the door handle trim bezel (starting at the top on both components). Then pop all the body clips from around the door panel. from here, you will need to lift the door panel upwards to clear some tight spots.
You will notice that the door slides down onto small metal clips where the door pull is... you need to remove the clips and place them back on the door itself to m ake installation a LOT easier.
Reverse to assemble.


Proper procedure says to remove the rear shelf cover to replcae the speakers.. I chose not to do so and it worked correctly for me, but you may experience different results

both procedures include removing the trunk liner ( black pastic piece in the rear of the trunk) - this is self explanitory for removal


If it was me, i would try option 2 and if you are not satisfied of how well teh speaker grills line up, perform option 1.

Option 1: Removing rear shelf.
Lift up on rear seat bottom and remove from vehicle. There are Several bolts at the bottom of the seat back that hold the seat in, aswell as the seatbelts, remove all these bolts.
At the top of the seats if you pull back on the seatback you will be able to see 4 black clips that hold the seat in, use a screwdriver to depress the clips and the seat should come loose.
Now you have to remove the pillar covers from the sides of the passenger comaprtment, these are just held in with b ody clips aswell, just pull on them and remove.
The rear shelf cover is next to come off. ghuess what.... more body clips. pop the body clips loose and you in business. reverse to re-assemble

Option 2: this was what i went with the SECOND time i put speakers in....
Pull up on the grills. the grills will come right out with a small bit of persuasion WARNING: you may not be able to re-install the grills very well without performaing option 1. The grills are held in by tabs that are folded over to the shelf cover. the speakers will not come out easily this way.. the cut outs in the shelf are smaller than the speaker, so a little finagleing will do the trick ( its much easier to push them out the top from the trunk )

I figured I'd have to pull the trim off the pillars to get at the deck, but I didn't know about pulling the seats. Doesn't sound too bad though.
