Default Possible to keep factory bose amp and replace head unit?

A friend of mine just got a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville with the Bose system.. He wants to hook up his iPod but the only PAC units I see that will work with the factory system require you to have the CD changer, which he does not..

So, I was wondering if he could just replace the head unit with a new aftermarket that has AUX input.. But, I'm thinking he may lose the factory amp..

Any help?

Thanks!

from what i have been told while figuring out on upgrading mine you can. you just have to watch the ohms on the speakers if using aftermarket

Thanks for the reply.. What do you mean by matching the ohms to the speakers? All I would be replacing is the factory headunit, not any of the speakers..

I want to either:

A. Be able to replace the factory headunit with a aftermarket that has AUX input while keeping the factory amp working.

or.

B. Keep the current headunit and get AUX input ability (not FM / Tape modulators).

i wasn't sure if you may do aftermarket speakers.

i am doing your A option myself. i am going with the pioneer avh 3200bt awesome h/u with front and rear aux and memory card slot.

but yes it can be done and keep your stock speakers and amp

So there'* nothing tricky about adding a new headunit with the bose system? How will the amp wire into the new headunit?

So you have the bose system with the factory amp? Are you replacing the headunit any time soon?

Swapping out the headunit is a good size project, and usually requires a complete rewiring of the speaker wires to do it right. The problem the 8 speaker systems run into is there are only outputs for 4 speakers that go into the amp, then get split to the 8 speakers from there. This makes you short 4 sets of wires short when you go to hook up the speakers to your aftermarket radio.
