I have never done anything electrical in a car - heck I have never done anything mechanical in a car!

But I want to change out the stock speakers in my 2002 Bonneville SSEi.

It has the standard 2002 SSEi "Monsoon" sound system - with the Monsoon amp - not even sure the power rating of the amp...

The rear deck 6x9 speakers in the trunk look like they just come off and could easily be replaced...?

Then the 5 1/4 in the rear doors - just have to take the door panel off and switch out the speakers...?

And the same for the front - just have to take off the door panel and switch out the 6 1/2 speakers...?

I mean, if that is all there is to it... it is just a matter of getting the doors off enough to swap out the speakers...?

the problems are not with the physical changing of the speakers, its the stock distribution of the sound may be separate and the speakers you buy are combined. they are normally weird ohm ratings which at most can destroy your speakers, and not sound any better than the stock ones. another issue is the lack of aftermarket 5.25'*. the worst part of the system is really the HU, a reasonable @130 dollar HU and some mid level 6x9'* and 6.5'* in the front will honestly sound ten times better than the monsoon or bose gm systems. with no amp.

these speakers are decent, but if i had some extra cash i would go with polk db691 and polk db651, i have had a few sets of polk speakers and even amped they last forever and sound great

As stated, I am not sure how many watts it is rated.

Yes, I would like to change out the HU as well, but then you have to do a lot more work, get some sort of new part, etc - so the steering wheel controls will work and then another part so the warning bells ring in the car, etc.

Plus, I kind of like the looks of the factory HU - matches everything...

your better doing nothing then because all you speaker outputs are separate from the amp and if you put composite speakers in the 6x9 spot for example it will just have the bass frequencies coming out of it. and you cant just hook the amp outputs together.

those clarion HU'* have 728 colors and one is bound to be close. i have an older dxz845mp that matches my firebird. as far as the steering wheel and bells you can do it without. i dont like the steering wheel controls or racket the car makes, you can get the cheap adapter for ebay for non onstar etc. cars and it will work. either adapter has to be wired to the RAP circuit then will work as the original one did.

•Remove the rear seat back. Refer to Rear Seat Back Replacement in Seats.




•Disconnect the radio amplifier electrical connectors (2).
•Remove the fasteners securing the radio amplifier to the mounting bracket.
•Lift the radio amplifier to remove.

So you just can't swap out the factory speakers or new ones?!?!

Did you mean component speakers and not composite...?

you have a bunch of speakers in your car, each has their own two wires coming from the amp. the amp takes the low level input from the radio and directs the frequencies to each respective speaker. ( lows to the 6x9, highs to the tweeters, mids to the doors, and fronts do the lows to the 6.5'* and highs to the tweeters) unless you found exactly the same setup in aftermarket that was the same ohms, same speaker purpose and same power it wouldnt sound any better. and it is unlikely that you would find such a setup anyway. aftermarket speakers are 2 or 4 ohms and full range, and have to be powered/wired this way.

Strange... because I could swear I read other posts on here of people who did exactly that - and they say it sounds better...
