We have an '02 with a cd changer installed in the trunk but can't get it to open. when you slide the front cover open nothing happens.

When you open the door, you need to slide it all the way open until you hear and feel a light "snap". After this, it'll take a few seconds but the magazine should eject. Give this a try and post back with the results.

we have tried that several times and it does not eject...my daughter has had a couple of people tell her that it is missing a piece but no one seems to tell her what the piece is that is missing

Not sure off hand what piece would be missing. Unless something is broken, there is only the CDX itself and the magazine.
Is there a magazine loaded currently? If so, does the CDX otherwise function normally?
There is a (white) light present when you open the CDX door, does it illuminate?
Do you see a CD 'Stack' on the head unit display?
Have there been any messages on the head unit display?
I'll try and take some pictures of mine later to help you identifiy what others believe might be missing.

At leat this establishes that there is power to the CDX and that data communications between it and the head unit are intact. I'll post some pics later.

I thought this would be the case. The CDX should detect the presence of a magazine when you close the door and won't try to go through the load procedure if it isn't there.
It is looking as though the CDX is going to have to come out for repair. It may be a case that a CD is stuck because it either wasn't loaded in the tray quite straight or something happened when the mechanism tried to load a disk. It could also be that something is damaged with the mechanism. If you load CD'* upside down, it will give you an error, but should not prevent you from ejecting the magazine.
I'll still take some pics for you. Hopefully someone didn't try and insert the wrong magazine before you bought the car.
