Default New or Rebuild Tranny

Hi, I've got an 02 SSEI and I'm assuming the transmission is shot. It started to shift hard a few months back. I'm figuring PCS on that. Well, recently I've noticed a lot of slipping while trying to accelerate. Will the transmission probably need replaced? Oh, I did have it flush a couple months ago. If replacement is due, does anyone recommend trying to buy a used tranny or doing a rebuild of the one I have. Also, what sort of prices has everyone seen to take on such a task? Thanks

so, it started having issues shortly after you flushed it? Did you put the right type and amount of fluid in it?

When you did the flush did you change the filter as well? How did the old fluid look? How did the magnet on the pan look? I would check fluid levels first. Make sure it'* hot, and running when you check it. If you must replace, check out INTENSE-Racing.com - G8, Grand Prix, Bonneville, Regal, L67 3800 Supercharged Performance Products. and ZZPerformance They both have rebuilt transmissions.

I did have the filter replaced when tranny fluid was done. The fluid that came out looked like motor oil! The magnet was also coverd thick with junk. I just got back from the Smoky Mountains this weekend in the car, a 1000 mile roundtrip, and was worried bout makin it up the hills. I did notice that when accelerating to the point I feel the "slipping" the turbo boost goes up, but the RPM stays the same. I was just wondering if there may be a problem with the firing of the engine instead, or is this what happens when tranny starts to go out? Also, when too much slipping starts, the service engine soon starts to flash. I have had that light on for a few and had it checked. I was told the 6th cynlinder was missin and probably a therm. for coolant. I did replace all the plugs and wires. I was not sure bout the thermostat replacement.

The boost gauge will go up and down depending on load. It'* normal.

Funny codes with #6 could be the wire for #6 is touching the O2 sensor wire, check this. If your trans fluid was dark it could be burnt from a slipping torque converter. I also suspect the clutches are worn out. This is all the stuff you found on the magnet. You could try changing the fluid and filter again. If the trans was really bad the filter could be plugging up again. Even if the fluid looks clean the filter may be plugged. Remember, your only changing part of the fluid, the rest was still in the trans with all that gunk. If this don't fix it, then a good rebuilt trans may be in order. If you can do the swap yourself, then one of the links I had is a good place to get one.

Edit. If your engine is heatign and cooling right, no need to change the thermostat.

I had my tranny replaced by the dealer 2 years ago. It was a remanufactured one, but it came with a 100k warranty. Cost me $2800. I hate paying for labor, but replacing the tranny in these cars is a BIG job. The front left suspension needs to be removed. I would not recommend doing it yourself unless the experts here on the forum say it is a reasonable job. Anyway, it was replaced at 123,000 miles and I now have 167,000 on my 2000 SE, with no tranny problems whatsoever.
