Greasing Strut Bearings
Is it possible to grease the bearings just spraying up in the wheel well, without taking any of the suspension apart? The car has been making this noise for a year or two, I didn't realize it was dry bearings. They're probably pretty worn by now, and are making the noise more often. It'* also a bit more like a crack now than a clunk. I need to hold off a bit before replacing the bearings, so I'd like to be able to lube them without throwing off the alignment.
Can anyone give a description of what to aim at and how to get to it when greasing this way? Also, what kind of spray grease should be used? I know I have some penetrating oil around. Should I get some of that sloppy *** white lithium spray, or could penetrating oil work? Or something else? :?

The strut bearings aren't as easy to reach on the 2000+* as it was on the previous generation. Look at the very top of the strut and you should be able to see the separation between the strut and the mount. Try to get some lube in there. Penetrating oil will likely to a bit thin, but if you can get some motor oil in there, that would probably work better. Are you fairly certain it is the strut bearings, instead of the intermediate steering shaft? If the strut bearing is binding, you should be able to feel it by placing your hand on the spring while someone turns the wheel. Don't get your arm caught.

I thought it was the intermediate shaft before, that'* why I didn't really worry about it. Now it'* slightly more violent sounding, and it'* coming from the right side, up high. Are you saying to lube from the wheel well or from under the hood?

Um. I hope not too. The bearing is definitely worn too far at this point. I greased the hell out of it and there was no change. If I turned the wheels from the driver side and watched up in the wheel well, the assembly turned smoothly. If I did the same on the other side, the movement was really jerky. Maybe that uneven motion makes the spring jiggle and rapidly coil and uncoil in a wavelike motion? It would happen really fast and probably not be very noticeable, but over thousands of miles maybe that fatigues the spring too much.
I saw in a Northern Auto catalog these complete bolt-in kits that come with struts, springs, mounts, boots, the whole shebang. Unfortunately, they're for Grand Ams and Hondas and crap. Has anyone seen that for a Bonneville?
