Second question, there is about a 1/4" strip of dried up corrosion around where the battery was. Even a rag won't get it up. Will it ever eat the paint and metal even though it'* all dried up?

as stated above, use a baking soda and water solution to clean it up, it will clean any battery acid that may be left behind, other that that maybe put some sealer down on any bare metal
