Sounds like the forward band has broken. By shifting to 1 or 2 it engages the manual 1-2 band and allows the transmission to work. A rebuild or new trans is in your future.
Might want to check car-part.com for transmissions in your area. I've had pretty good luck finding parts that way.

They seem to be hard to come by, it will have to be from a 2000+ and from a Bonneville only since it has the rear mount on it and ones from GPs don't

you need to look at your trans tag. i just went through the hunt. you have 3 options for the */c trans they are for 2000 0FCB, 0CHB, 0FHB mine turned out to be the 0CHB. i'll go get a pick of the one in my garage to show you where to look for the trans tag to tell you which one you need. by the way your trans will only come out of a 2000 SSEi

Actually.. it'* not as tough as it sounds guys.
The differences will be internal or external range sensor, one pressure reading manifold or multiple reading manifold (on valve body), webbing for mount on back or not casing, clip style lines with check ball or threaded lines with checkball in valve body.
Those are the major differences before 2003 was controlled differently. Other models like the GP'* etc can have the webbing on the back of the trans. To know for sure, you must physically look at each transmission. Some have it some don't.
For other differences, I'd call Dave a TripleEdgePerformance as he knows the transmissions better than most that say "only X year" the differences above make the entire difference.
