Even after all the work I did on my car, I rebuilt my own transmission, new torque converter, testing my TCC switch, etc. I still get surging. All though not nearly as often as before I adjusted my TCC switch. I suggest turn the switch in 1 tooth and try that, then adjust again if needed. I find mine surges mainly around 45mph, in 4th gear with TC locked. Start going up a small hill and the engine load goes up, but still stays locked up and will surge. I now simply reach down and shift in the 3rd gear and all is well. Then at the top of the hill shift back to 4th. Over the years I have heard many people complain of the same problem. It can be minimized with adjusting the TCC switch, but rarely seems to go away all together. Seems to be a inherent problem with our cars. I even went in and played with the tune in the PCM a bit. My belief on this is a small tuning error where things like throttle position, load, speed, and gear all over lap and cause a conflict. The torque converter then goes in and out of lockup.

Can you find out if your trans guy replaced the valve body in the EPC solenoid? I would like to rule this out of my troubleshooting.

Danthurs

The TCC valve is in the transmission valve body. Where is this TCC switch under the dash? Is it on the brake pedal lever?

I also have a 2003 with 50K miles. The surging on it is barely noticeable but still there. I also have a 1997 with 180K miles which does NOT have surging.

The TCC solenoid is inside the transmission on the valve body, the TCC switch is under the dash on the brake.

The EPC should be replaced when the transmission is rebuilt. It'* one of the weakest points on our transmissions.

As far as surging goes, my 97 will go months with no surging, then it will happen once or twice and then stop.

I would think that the T shop replaced the EPC during the rebuild. They seemed to be knowledgeable about this type of transmission. I'll find out for sure Monday morning.

What get'* me is Pontiac couldn't have been selling a new car with this type of problem. After all who would buy the car? So, something is causing the car to surge and I'm determined to figure out what the problem is. I just wish I had access to a MODIS or Tech II. It would be nice to be able to see some real time data. It might allow me to pinpoint the problem area.

In the coming days I'll post more info once I find out what'* up...

Look what I just found, another surging problem. This guy found that resetting the “TAPs” (Transmission Adaptive Pressure) fixed the problem.

Can we do this without a Tech 2?
Will disconnecting the battery reset this?

Let me know what you guys think!

You do not need a tech2 for that. It can be done with HPtuners scanner. Not sure about other enhanced real time scanners, but most should be able to do that.

This is in HPtuners VCM scanner.

I haven't looked over the wiring diagrams yet but was wondering if the oil press. switch or coolant temp sensor might cause the problem. If those sensors report back to the pcm, then wouldn't it be possible although unlikely? I say this because I replaced the oil Press switch yesterday, my gauge was flaking out and that solved the problem. Now the surging still occurs but not as often and at a higher speed. Also the surging doesn't occur when the coolant temp is cold (under 180 degrees). I did test the TCC switch under the dash and adjusted on saturday but that didn't help...

I don't see either of those causing this problem
