2000 SSEi faint knock/ rattle @ 1000-2000 rpm.
I tried to take a video of it, but it is too faint for my phone to pick it up. It doesn't sound like a distinct knock sound, it sounds more like a rattle than a knock and Iv'e only been able to hear it so far with the car in park or N. Doesn't matter if the engine is cold or warmed up and it seems to be coming from the bottom of the engine and it most noticeable under the car. It goes away under 1k rpm'*, and when you get up near 2k rpm'*.

Sometimes it helps to "see" in the video where its pointing.
Its doesn't seem like a rod knock, they are more thumpy and slower.
To be on the safe side, take it to 2 different shops and have them "listen" and see what they say.

It seems the loudest around the oil pan area. I stuck my head under there while someone held the rpm'* at 1500 or so. I mean im not 100% sure thats exactly where its coming from. It doesn't 100% sound like a knock, it only does it at certain rpm range which doesn't make sense to me. But the only semi logical explanation is rod bearing knock.

Been playing with the 3800 for about 10 years now and the times we trashed the bottom ends it always seemed the knock got more prominent as it revved up rather than go away. However, we all know that there is no set rule on such noises. You know, I think I'd pull the dust cover under there and check out the flex plate for cracks also. They can make strange noises all over the RPM range when cracked or the bolts are not torqued properly. Just a thought. In my experience, rod bearings usually do not last long on the 3800 when they're toast and you should see lower oil pressure with a bad bearing.

We had a 1993 black SSE that had that same noise.. Dealer replaced cat, didn't help.. Just lived with it. And I have heard it on others.. I too am curious what makes that sound.
