Default Rattling sporadically

I have a rattling and squealing noise sporadically. It does it at all rpm ranges. It comes and goes. I thought it might have been the tensioner pulley but when i went to get one the salesman heard it and said it was the ac compressor. However if it was the compressor I am told that when turned on it would stop squealing. What does a bad supercharger sound like? Maybe the alternator? Car is running excelent I just want to make sure nothing major is going on . Could it just be the belts? Any suggestions and ideas? I have tried twice to get the damn thing on video but like I said it is very sporadic

Does it sound like a real high pitched "nails on the chalk board" squeal?
The 1992 Bonneville did that. the compressor actually ended up shooting peices of metal out. that was fun.

If you turn the a/c on...yes, it will be fine. However, if is 30 degrees outside and you dont want the a/c on anymore...the noise will come back.not fun Im pretty sure you'll be buying an A/C unit. i'd also suggest using brake cleaner on the serpentine belt, just to be sure its clean and no dirt is on it. Thats just my 2 cents.

maybe someone with more mechanical experience could clear this one up further for you...but that should put you in the right direction.

have fun

Use a long handled screw driver and place the tip on the offending sound but no moving parts. Put your ear up against the screw driver handle to use as a stethascope (sp).
My call is the tensioner pulley as I've seen several that spin, squeal, spin, wobble, squeal, spin on again off again.

Thank you for the help. I will try the screwdriver trick. It is a chattering rattle and I know it is one of the spinning components so I will start with the tensioner and belts and then go from there. I dont care if I have ac or not so I might buy the ac delete from Intense if all else fails.
