Right sweeping turn (Grab/Shimmy)

Default Right sweeping turn (Grab/Shimmy)

New to forum.. have a 2003.. Both my wife and I have noticed a grab or shimmy while making a right hand bend at highway speeds. Left bend is a nice smooth flow, but right bends seem to be very touchy. We have had the car into 2 Pontiac dealers and one Goodyear tire dealer. The Pontiac dealers say there good be something wrong with the tires and the Goodyear dealer says it is not the tires. All 3 say they can kind of tell what my wife and I are talking about, but also when they talk to us.. They seem to talk to us like there really is nothing the matter... We have 3 other vehicles and I know both my wife and I are not nutz... :o .. I am wondering if any of you have noticed what I am describing with any of your cars.. When taking a sweeping right turn at highways speeds the stearing seems to be very touchy, (grabby).. But left sweeping turns are very smooth...

i would start by rotating the tires, if this doesnt change the symptoms, i would lean toward a failing wheel hub

Great point.. Do you suggest the the standard rotation, or would you suggest a specific rotation..(Wheel Hub)?? by hub do you mean rim? Sorry, just wanted to make sure I was clear on your response...

i would rotate all tires front to back and back to front.

if there is no change after the tire rotation i would suspect a bad wheel hub ( this is where the bearnigs are enclused that hold the wheel to the car )

Got it...while turning right, the load would be on the left wheel, would you suspect that wheel hub or I suppose it could be either... Normally if you have a bad wheel hub or wheel bearing, wouldn't the tire rock back and forth? Or maybe it is just not that bad yet, if that is what may be causing it.. Again. thanks for the advice, I will rotate the tires and see what happens...

Wheel hub symptoms can be tricky, usually when a hub is going bad, it will usually make a bit of a groaning noise and be loose when you move the wheel by hand, but neither of these are necessarily true. Another thing to think about: Do you ever have a popping noise while cornering, not while turning the wheel, but when the vehicle itself is turning? This could be a sign that a strut bearing is your problem.

The more that i think about it, if neither place found you to have a bad wheel bearing, then my next idea would have to be one of the strut bearings

Well, the car is still under warrenty, however the issue is like I stated in my first post. The Pontiac shops say they think they know what I am talking about, but blame it on the tires, and the tire shop says it is not the tires. The Pontiac shop does not seem interested in helping me resolve the issue, because honestly I think they think I am nutz.. But, I know there is something wrong, it'* not just me.. I will try the tires, and see if it goes away.. But the Pontiac shops are telling me there is nothing lose are wrong with the front end parts... I can let you know what happens after I rotate the tires, if I can get back to this post in a couple days...

if your tires are decently worn, it might be worth your money to replace them just to shut the dealer up about them if in fact it is not the tires causing the problem. Is there any reasoning that they gave you as to how or why the tires are causing the problem

The dealer said they think one of the tires has a serperation in it, and they said the back tires look "choppy", but the GoodYear dealer says you would feel the tire seperation at low speeds and it would go away at high speeds, and the GoodYear dealer said that the rear tires have a little coping, but that the tires over all look in real good shape. The car only has 23K miles on it..

if a tire had a belt failure or a slipped tread, then it should show up when the attempt to balance, and should also cause a vibration
