I was doing rear brakes and as I had the car in the air, I noticed that the airline to the right shock was cut. I fixed the line by splicing it with a rubber tube. I finished the brakes and took her for a drive.

Things were not good.

The car drove like it had no rear shocks and leaned to the left. I got back home and noticed that the right rear was about 4-5 inches higher than the left side. I took off the air hose to the right rear shock, hoping that air would come out, but it didn't.

Could it be that when I jacked the car up, the shock sucked something in that will not let air back out? Or is something else going on here?

The air should go in and out of the shock easily. I would guess that either something is blocking the air as you have suggested, or the hydraulic portion of the shock is damaged.

It should be mentioned that jacking the car shouldn't have caused this directly. There was most likely an underlying issue. Also rubber tubing is not going to hold the pressure of the air line.

This morning the air had leaked out, so I am at least riding level again. I guess there is something preventing the air from exiting, so it looks like I have to replace it.

I have not had to do the shocks on this car yet. Is there anything out of the ordinary that I need to know?

I know the rubber tube will not hold the pressure. It is just temporary until I can get the replacement tube.

The exact same thing happened on my '93 SSEi last year after I replaced my struts.

I jacked the car up for something ( don't remember what ) and when I let it down the back end was waaayyy higher then the front.

Turned out that on my car the rubber boot that actually holds the air got folded up inside itself and when I let the car down it pinched and wouldn't let the strut compress. I had to remove the level sensor and move the arm so the compressor would pump air in the strut. as soon as the ELC strut bag had air in it, the fold / pinch was gone and I was able to reconnect the sensor and everything has worked perfect since then.

Not saying that is what happened to your car, but might be worth checking out.

I think GM makes small compression fittings to repair them.

I was thinking about blowing it up somehow, but I was afraid of not being able to get the air back out.

Rock Auto http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...,parttype,7556 sells a pair (Monroe) for $62. It says that it comes with air lines and fittings "where applicable". So, it may solve your problem if it does come with the lines. Otherwise - you can get one of the fittings that Bill mentioned.

The shocks are the easiest that I have replaced on any car. Two easy to get to and remove bolts on the bottom, and two inside the trunk to remove the mount and it'* out. If you have the proper tools, you can just remove the large nut on the shock rod instead. Inspect the mounts, as they have been known to go bad. Support the lower control arm for safety'* sake.

Thanks Archon. I jacked the car up again last night, just to see if the obstruction cleared, but it did not. This morning, it was back down to normal height. I am just going to replace them.
