rear window regulator
Hey guy...
I was told today that my window needs a new regulator. Have any of you had this trouble? They want to charge me over $500 for the part and installation. I think this is ridiculous. Have any of you self-installed one of these? I'm thinking about buying the part and taking it to an auto-glass place for installation. The dealer is charging $100/hr labor...the auto-glass place is charging $65.
Am I crazy?

my rear window on the driver'* side needed a new regulator, thankfully I was still under warranty. I wonder if this is a common problem.

I think is a common problem, mine craped out (right rear) about 2 days after reading another post about a 2k with a bad regulator.
I took my door skin off and c-clamped it for now, I noticed it had a broken cable but was in a hurry so didnt take it apart for a closure look. The parts are pricey and are available at gmparts direct lookup part number 25715741

I stoped off at the dealership today to find out more about the window cable and if it could be changed out.........NO...have to buy the entire assembly, why? because GM has said it is too many parts to stock for any particular model.
Which would work for me if it were a $20 part instead of a $230 which is what I was quoted. This should be a recall item!!!

Yeah, it seems like there should be some sort of recall if this is a widespread problem. I sure hope it doesn't happen again after my warrantee is gone.

Window Regulator Replacement - Rear Door
Removal Procedure
Remove the door trim panel. Refer to Trim Panel Replacement - Side Rear Door .
Remove the door module. Refer to Door Control Module Replacement .
Remove the water deflector. Refer to Water Deflector Replacement - Rear Door .
Loosen the window retainer to window clamp fasteners 4 revolutions.
Lower the window regulator about half way down.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the power window motor.
Remove the window regulator to inner door panel fasteners (1, 2, 3).
Remove the window regulator.
Tilt the motor end of the window regulator to the forward end of the door.
Tilt the top of the regulator toward the lower rear corner of the door.
Remove the regulator through the front access hole in the door panel.
Installation Procedure
Install the window regulator through the front access hole in the door panel.
Notice
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Install the window regulator fasteners. Tighten
Tighten the fasteners in this order, (1, 3, 2) to 9 N·m (80 lb in).
Remove the tape from the window.
Lower the window into the window regulator clamps.
Install the power window motor electrical connector.
Important
Start the vehicle to ensure maximum power to the window motor. This is required to fully seat the window for adjustment.
Raise the window to the fully closed position. Tighten
Tighten the window retainer clamp fasteners to 11 N·m (95 lb in).
Check for proper window operation and a tight seal before installing the water deflector and trim panel.
Install the water deflector. Refer to Water Deflector Replacement - Rear Door .
Install the door module. Refer to Door Control Module Replacement .
Install the door trim panel. Refer to Trim Panel Replacement - Side Rear Door .

What does it take to get a recall both of my wife rear windows have had this happen and we never use them. The first time it was under warranty and this time it'* going to cost me $285.

Sign me up on the recall list! I had both rear windows quit on me within 2 weeks of each other. Funny thing was - it was the same friend both times who was in the back seat and ran the window down and couldn't get it back up! (Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy, either!)
I just took the regulator out each time and ran a screw through the top hole to hold the regulator solid, and I put it back in for security for the time-being. I don't use the rear windows that much, and I could've just guessed how much the replacements cost. I, too, would've tried replacing myself if I could get just the cable assy.
Let me know if anyone has an idea how we can initiate something!
