Default Water Pump

My mom took the '00 bonnie in today to get the ambient temperature sensor replaced (they wouldnt let me take a shot at it )
Anyway, when we got the car back the mechanic told us that our water pump was leaking and that we needed a new one. Unfortunatly this costs around $400 if we let the mechanic do it. How easy would it be for us to do it ourselves? We have full shop of tools and can probably find the time to do it. We can probably get a Chiltons or Haynes manual to help us out, is this doable for us?

There is a procedure written out in the TechInfo - Tech Know How #24 which is for a 97 SSE. If you can follow this procedure you can save yourself a nice chunk of change. Is there anyone else out there that can speak from '00 experience? Let us know what you decided to do.

You can buy a waterpump from autozone with a lifetime warranty (if it ever fails they replace it.. no questions asked as long as you have the receipt) for $40.. I had my mechanic do it, he charged me $50 in labor to do it, so about $90 total for me on my 97 Riv. I say you're getting ripped off big time. It'* less than an hour job too.

HI,

I tried to replace the water pump by myself. Mine is 93, SE. 3.8L,
It'* hard to remove the motor mounting bolt. I don't even know how to remove the bolt.
There was pretty small rooom to do a job.

Do I have to remove the motor mounting bolt anyway? for my SE, not supercharged Bonneville?

Please help me. Midas guy damn smiled at me as calling $213 for the replacement.
I bought already the water pump, but don't know simply how to replace it.
Is it really easy or not for my bonny?.. I found the doc from the machanic forum, but it'* not useful. it was almost the same as my chilton'* book.

Let me know please your Know-how.

Mike, That original $400.00 price tag for water pump replacement sounds like a "Goodwrench" price quote maybe. Was that estimate from a Pontiac (GM) dealership? The water pump cost from the dealership would be approximately $100.00 + flat rate labor charges + taxes. This would bring total to maybe $250.00 whatever. With the goodwrench program I think once you have the new water pump installed for the $400.00, if it fails again down the road, GM will replace it no cost to you. But I'm not completely certain if that'* the way it works. I think it'* similar to an extended warranty, but at individual component level.

:( water pump going out? in a 00? dammit! I want a newer bonne but all of these posts I read are make'n me wary of buy'n one, perhaps 02'* and up are a little better off, na that shouldn't be happen'n at all, it'* only 3 years old! I guess they don't build em like they used to. The problem I believe is these newer workers in the factory really not give'n a .... we need to bring back tha older people who actually took pride in make'n products especially something as exspensive as a car! I know there'* some youner workers at factories who care but thier peers out number them who don't care they just want a paycheck.

I've talked to and know a couple of younger people in tha factories; They tell me and I over hear stories about them leaving work with the equipment just operating on it'* own, doin heavy drugs ultimately clouding there judgement passing any and everything, Hell, one of my family memebers got on at GM but due to drugs in thier system was quickly evaporated (terminated) I guess it'* hard to find good help when half tha nation is on drugs and or just don't take pride in thier work...........
