Just got back from the dealer ...
In regards to the service stability system issue on my 2000 Bonneville SSEi. They ran the disagnostic and found the C1287 code (for a malfunctioning Steering Wheel sensor).
They quoted me $295 parts and labor to fix it. Is that a good deal or would I be better off buying the part (part# anyone?) from gmpartsdirect.com and having a local shop (anyone know of capable shops in the Chicago area?) do the replacement?
Thanks for any help!

It a rather detailed procedure.... Revised Steering Wheel Position Sensor or Steering Shaft Lower Bearing Replacement Procedure and Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering Procedure so you may have to check around for a shop willing to do it. If you're unsure about the cost, check with another dealer, as a start.

Actually, that price isn't too bad. My dealer quoted me about $250.00 for the part and labor. I've had this problem since I bought the car. The sensor does serve a purpose Im sure, but if you hit one of the buttons on the DIC (Reset or Select, not sure which at the moment) the message will be cleared until you restart the car again. Sometimes mine doesn't come on for a few days...other times it comes on immedaitely. Though the idea of buying a car with a problem like that doesn't sound appealing, it really doesn't hamper the vehicle IMO. Also, if your gonna do it just let the dealer handel it...not all shops wanna do that kind of work and they might charge you more for it in the long run.
