Default 2000 Fuel Gauge Problem

Alrighty, my fuel gauge has a mind of its own and I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this problem. Basically, and I've owned this car for a few months so I don't really know how long it'* been happening, my fuel gauge only reads about 12-14 gallons of gas in the tank.

So for instance, I was driving down to Washington D.C. got into the city on E and drove around (lost) for 2 1/2 hours on Empty. It'* as if the car gets confused when the gas gets low, because I'll get right around E and my "Check Gauges" light will come on, if I keep driving the gauge will sometimes pop back up to 1/8 of a gallon for a bit, then fall back to E and the "Check Gauges" light will come on again. To tell you the truth it really doesn't bother me, I just know it shouldn't be like that, because as soon as I put gas in it, the Check Gauges light goes off and the car recognizes the gas put in and it uses it.

You'll find that there is a cheap fix for this if you don't mind a bit of work. There is a aprt # that replaces just the wiper part in the gas sending unit. There is a post with pics. What has happened is your wiper has lost its fingers.

This looks like a cheap fix, I'm wondering by comparison how much the dealership would charge for this?

The dealer would probably try to replace with a new sender.

Follow the links about the fix for the fuel guage. I did mine about a month ago from start to finish in about 40 minutes. The indiviual who took the time to create the excellent write up and attach pics did a excellent job and deserves a attaboy for his contribution. I'm sure the dealer will charge for a complete new sender and labor. My guess would be around $400. Buy the part as described here and you should be able to fix it for approx. $40 and a hour of your time.

The part (# 15824379) lists for $43.50. That'* probably what your local dealer will want for it. GM Parts Direct (and other discount AC Delco parts dealers) want about half that, plus whatever shipping and handling charges they want to apply.
