Default Lousy trunk design?

Why is it that the trunk lid will not stay up when the car is on a small incline? I start to unload things and I get hit in the back with the lid coming down. Is this just poor design or maybe a problem with an adjustment? While driving home after buying this car the DIC showed the trunk lid was not closed, so I stopped to close it and discovered a broken spring lying in the middle of the trunk. The dealer replaced it free, but it still doesn't seem right that it won't stay up.

That can be true for the 92-99 crowd too. Several factors vary the weight of the trunk lid (options you may or may not have):

Spoiler
Trunk lid carpeting
Automatic trunk release

Or any combination of the above. 92-99 take the spoiler into account, and have 2 springs available. One for with, and one for without. Checking my books, the same holds true for the 00+ bonnevilles as well.

If yours pops just an inch or two, and stays up on level ground, you're pretty typical. Maybe find some spacer blocks you can wedge into the torsion bar springs or something?

yours doesn't exactly sound typical to me either. With our 00 SSEi the trunk flies open when popped and stays open. There'* quite a lot of tension. The same is true for my Aurora. But, with my new spoiler on the Aurora the trunk now only pops opened about a foot but doesn't have enough force to open all the way. Will is probably right, they might hvae replaced the broken spring, with the wrong one.

Ive notived that in a few GPs my friends have where if they have a spoiler on it, it doesnt pop well, but like my 02 SSEi, if I stand too close, Im gonna get a chin full of trunk cause its got that "boost" release, incase your transporting mexs across the border

"oh my.. we should go to the hospital" I didnt but damn that hurt.

Have them check both springs. They may still have the stickers with part numbers on them. Or better yet, if you can read anything on them, these are the right torsion bars if you have the spoiler:

25712088 right
25712089 left

And without the spoiler:

25712086 right
25712087 left

In addition, the remaining stock spring may have been weakened while the other one was failing.

The springs are adjustable. There should be two or three positions they can be moved to to increase the tension (and the speed at which it will fly open). Mine is on max, and if anything is left on the lid when I pop it my car becomes a catapult.

I'm going to have to look into that mine used to fly open a long time ago, now with 2 full layers of dynamat that trunk lid is HEAVY. On slight incline it wont stay open and on level I always worry about it slamming down on my back, only happened dozen plus times, when I show my trunk I have to wedge it open, don't want it nailing a spectator.

Wheres the spring andjustment?

if I remember right (its raining right now, so I can't verify) there are two long rods that act as springs. On the left side and right side near the hinge there should be two or three notches that these rods can be put into. I will check to see which ones mine are in and get back to you.
