What'* the difference on '00 fuel pumps???
The fuel pump in my SSEi went out on Tuesday night. Wednesday morning, I called around to try to find one. Advance Auto says there are two designs, and upon looking at them in the catalog, they are identical except for one has a longer pickup hose from the pump to the line fitting. Same pressure, same connectors, everything was the same.
NAPA has 3 designs. One TO VIN Y4120965, one FROM VIN Y4120966, and one FROM VIN Y4120922. They had the last one in stock, and sicne my VIN is after all of those numbers, I took it. Got home, took the old one out, and sure enough, the pickup tube is the only thing that'* different. So, I guess I got the wrong one. But it works, and it fit, gas guage works, everything'* fine with it so far.
So my question is:
What is the reason for the design change, and why is one 40 bucks more than the other?

It'* any one'* guess. Could be re-designed for many different reasons, don't know. Bottom line, you're back in running order, good deal. Maybe Kennginn can answer the NAPA question.

I'm just curious because if there are two designs, and one will work in place of the other, then why sell two different pumps, and charge more for one than the other? It'* just ludicris if you ask me. 300 bucks for a pump that has two inches more hose than the 260 dollar one? Why not sell one and charge 300 bucks for it?
Eh, I don't care, as long as it works. Hasn't given me fits so far, but we'll see what the future brings. Hopefully I don't end up screwed in the long run.

interesting. I know on the Aurora, it'* the same story. Same fuel pump design, just different hoses. The reason on the Aurora however is because the V6 model got a deeper gas tank at 18.5 gallons, and the V8 Aurora got a more shallow gas tank holding 16.5 gallons. Maybe the Bonneville too had different gas tank sizes? Maybe it was a mid-year change?
