Reuse Plug Shields?
simply wanting to know if people are reinstalling the head shields when replacing plug wires? I have my napa beldon wires and ngk plugs ready to go in...but i am trying to decide if i want to put the heat shields back on.
Now, i remember on my 98 Trans am with LS1 that i had alot of trouble with the heat shields on that car arcing and causing me problems..so i pulled them. But it was a toy/fun car..not driven much. My truck has them but i haven't puled them yet to replace... On our company 2000 burban i removed them too.....
that being said. i would think it wouldn't hurt anything..but i want some opinions please.....
Thanks!

they're just there for extreme heat situations.
lets say you're towing a trailer, on mountainous roads, its 100*F and your A/C is on.
Thats gonna get PRETTY. DAMN. HOT. back there...hot enough to melt the plug boots? Probably not, but maybe if your car starts running lean for some reason, and your manifolds start glowing good luck getting melted boot off.
I run them just because there is probably a reason they were put there in the first place, otherwise GM would not have spent the money putting them on there...it'd be cost effective to just leave them off.
oh yeah, and why didn't cars run them before these? probably because they were RWD, and RWD manifolds probably stay a bit cooler being that they're surrounded by more air than a transverse application.

there were many FWD cars as well that didn't get these metal boots on them by car manufacturers I know my wifes honda doesn't have them either.... just my thoughts anyway.
since i have personally dealt with the negative side of these ...(arcing)...i am not taking the chance and leaving them off. easy enough to put back on if need be anyway.
thanks!
