Default How to avoid Air Pockets with undrilled Tstat?

I will be installing a 180 t-stat and decided against the drill hole. What steps should I follow before or after installing the new t-stat to minimize the chance that an air pocket occurs to start with?

And what should I be looking for to determine if an air pocket exists?

The drilled hole is the best way, but this procedure in techinfo will still be the best route.
